Main source of livelihood
Later in 1977, the town was officially made a part of the newly-created Metro Manila area.
The significant year for Marikina was in 1887. It was in this year when shoemaking started to flourish through the efforts of Don Laureano "Kapitan Moy" Guevarra .
It was proclaimed a city through the Republic Act 8223 on
December 8, 1996

On February 25, 1987, the incumbent
Municipal Mayor Rodolfo Valentino
issued the Administrative Order No.
87-02 reactivating the Marikina
Footwear Development Council. Its
main objective was to systematize and
coordinate promotion, marketing
efforts and the programs of
manufacturers of footwear and allied
products of the town. It also launched
the First Marikina Trade Festival on
In 1990s, the footwear groups in
Marikina and other areas
witnessed the influx of cheap
goods that came from China,
Korea, Taiwan and other
countries due to trade
liberalization which further
intensified when the country
became a member of the World
Trade Organization (WTO) in
1995.
In 1995, under the leadership of
Mayor Bayani F. Fernando, the
Kapitan Moy residence was
restored to its former glory and
was declared the city’s “Sentrong
Pangkultura.”

Proudly unleashed the world’s
largest shoes in the world
On April 15, 2004, Congressman
Del R. De Guzman authored the
Republic Act 9290, an Act that
promoted the development of the
footwear, leather goods and
tannery Industries with the
mandate to bring back the
glorious days of the Marikina
Shoe Industry when it gained
respect and recognition not only
in the Philippines but worldwide.

CALUMPANG
The history of Calumpang
starts back during the time
of small family as that of
Tandang Tacio, who
according to the residents, is
the origin of the present
legend of the Calumpang
barrio.
San Antonio de Padua was
erected somewhere in the
vicinity of Daang Pasig.
West by White Plains, east
The area of Calumpang was Subdivisions, big factories,
reduced almost ½ of its multi-national corporations
original size. are the most site in the

SAN ROQUE
Medium-sized piece of real
estate.

Founding date of the barrio is
historically unknown.
San Roque is derived from
patron saint, whose honor a
chapel was built in the center of
the barrio.
Roosevelt Memorial High School
then Marikina Academy used to be
Tuazon mansion today a gasoline
station is built in the site.

STA.ELENA
Santa elena is Marikina’s
fulse whose every beat spell
progress.
It’s early beginning in year
1687, where the Jesuits
missionaires crossed the
river from Jesus dela peña in
search for a place to build
new church.
The population increased
and when shoe-making was
introduced by Laurence
“Kapitan Moy” Guevara.
SANTO NIÑO
No existing record of the formal
beginning of the barrio.
The area that they close was across the
river and because the name of the
patron saint, they named the area
Sto.Niño.Living witnesses in the town
of Sto.Niño still testify the original
named of the place was Halang.
Sto.Niño is situated just across the
river J.dela peña .
They come to be known as Taga Ilog
and later on contracted to name the
word Tagalog.
“Lupang Tagalog”
Originally the people of Sto.Niño were
fishermen, farmers and shomakers,
and across the river the vast extensive
fields of sugar cane plantation.
MALANDAY
-Ka-angkan Festival
- celebrates the value of
kinship and belongingness and
the solidarity of the city’s multi –
clan make up.
-“Ka-angkan ko, Mabubuting
tao”
- “Bansag”
-April 16
- conceptualized with the end view of invigorating the local shoe industry
- main attraction of the festival is the production of the largest pair of leather shoes complimented
by the tiangge sa ilog.

Library
The Marikina City Library
started as Municipal Library
Established on August 11, 1956.
Under the leadership of Mayor
Gil Estanislao Fernando (the
father of former Marikina Mayor
Bayani F. Fernando also widely
known as the “Education
Mayor”)
With the auspices of the
Municipal Government of
Marikina and the Bureau of the
Libraries(now the National
Library)
Library transferred to a new
building on August 16, 1962.
Its inauguration on November 25,
1962 coincided with the
celebration of National Book
Week.
Barrio libraries were established
at J. dela pena, Barangka,
Concepcion, Parang, and
Nangka.
Bigger library building was
constructed on the same site on
November 28, 1988 through the
assistance of the municipal
government and Philippine
National Bank (Marikina
Branch)
Marikina City library has transferred
to a new location and reopened
September 01, 2010
20,000 books and 300 CD’s and DVD’s
that cater to the different patrons are
accessible from the library’s diverse
sections.
Ready reference materials are also
available in the Periodicals,
recreational, teens’, Children’s, Laws,
and Governance, Filipiniana,
Rizaliana, and General Collection
sections.
An average of 200 patrons visits the
Marikina City Library everyday.
Ninety percent of them are college
students doing school related projects
and research.
