LITERATURE
LEGEND OF MARIA MAKILING BY DR. JOSE RIZAL
Development done
In the early days, Calamba was just a part of Tabuco, now known as Cabuyao. On August 28, 1742, Calamba became
a pueblo, separating it from Cabuyao. Progress set in and since then development started to flood in
continuously. Calamba became a component city on April 21, 2001 by virtue of Republic Act 9024. According to a
legend, the word “Calamba” was taken from the phrase “kalan-banga”. Kalan-banga was an earthen jar being
carried by a young woman whom a Guardia Civil stopped to ask for the name of the place. Mistakenly thinking that
she was being asked what she was carrying, she answered “kalan-banga”. Later on, Kalambanga was shortened to
Calamba.
Became a Component City
By virtue of Republic Act 9024 signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on March 5, 2001 and
strengthened by a plebiscite held on April 21, 2001.

history
Captain Juan de Salcedo discovered and founded Biñan at the end of June 1571, a month after Miguel Lopez
de Legaspi established Manila when he explored the largest freshwater lake in the Philippines and second in
Asia (Laguna de Bay).

When the seat of the provincial government of the Provincia dela Laguna de Bay was moved from Bay to
Pagsanjan in 1688, Biñan separated from its mother town Tabuco (now the city of Cabuyao).

In 1791, during the time of Pablo Faustino, Santa Rosa separated from Biñan. The following year, January 15 Sta
Rosa de Lima was established and became an independent town.

Historically, Biñan is nationally recognized in the books related to the biography of José Rizal, the country’s
national hero. It was in June 1869 when José Rizal as a young boy went to Biñan with his brother Paciano. They
proceeded to his aunt’s house near the town proper where they were to be lodged. Here, his first formal
education was entrusted to Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz who after a year and a half of tutelage advised
young Rizal to continue higher education in Manila. In honor of José Rizal, a plaque of recognition was
bestowed on the house where he stayed at. A monument now stands at the center of Biñan’s town plaza in
recognition of Biñan’s affiliation to Rizal.

Development done
Unless they live in Laguna province, most Filipinos’ first encounter with the City of Binan is through
the history books. Most record the fact that Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero, first came to the town in
June of 1869 with his elder brother Paciano to stay at their aunt’s house near the town proper.
In Binan, Rizal received his first formal education from Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz, who after 18
months of teaching the brilliant young man advised Rizal to continue his education in Manila.
The rest as they say is history, and today – Rizal Day, celebrated to mark the anniversary of the
national hero’s execution at the hands of Spanish authorities in 1896 – Plaza Rizal stands at the
center of Binan as a lasting reminder of the town’s link to his life and legacy. A plaque of recognition
was also bestowed on the house of Rizal’s aunt where he stayed.
Binan at present
The hero would probably be proud of present-day Binan, Laguna’s third-largest in terms of population
after Rizal’s native Calamba and Santa Rosa, as it was the country’s richest municipality before
assuming cityhood in 2010.
