The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP)

from Barásoain in Navarre, Spain

When the Filipino revolution broke out, the Spanish
authorities coined the term "baras ng suwail," which
means "dungeon of the defiant" because the church
was a meeting place for anti-Spanish and anti-
colonial illustrados.
Barasoain was known before as "Bangkal" a part of
Encomienda of Malolos integrated by Miguel Lopez de
Legaspi with the town of Calumpit in April 5, 1572.

isa citadel first built by Spanish conquistador, Miguel
López de Legazpi for the new established city
of Manila in the Philippines.
The fort was named after Saint James (Santiago in
Spanish), the patron saint of Spain.
Itis located at the mouth of the Pasig River and served
as the premier defense fortress of the Spanish
Government during their rule of the country.
