DELAYING HANDOFF

HANDOFF:
• It refers to the process of transferring ongoing call or data
connectivity from one base station to other base station.

•When a mobile moves into the different cell while the

conversation is in progress then the MSC transfer the call to a
new channel belonging to new base station.
DELAYING HANDOFF:

• It is a two-handoff -level algorithm

• The main purpose of creating two request handoff level is to

provide more opportunity for a successfull handoff.

• Handoff could be delayed if no available cell could take call.

• A plot of signal strength with two request handoff levels and
threshold level is shown in figure.
•When the signal strength drops
below the first handoff level, a
handoff request is initialised.
•If mobile unit is in hole or
neighboring cell is busy then
handoff will be requested
periodically every 5sec.
•At first handoff level handoff
takes place if signal is stronger.
•However when the second handoff level is reached ,the call will be
Handed off with no condition.
•The MTSO always handles the handoff first and the originating calls
second

•If no neighboring calls are available after the second handoff level is
reached ,the call continues untill the signal strength drops below the
threshold level then the call is dropped.

• If SAT(supervisory audio tone ) is not sent back to cell site by mobile

unit with in 5s,the cell site turns off the transmitter.
ADVANTAGES OF HANDOFF:

•When call traffic is heavy, the switching processor is

loaded and thus less number of handoffs would help

the processor to handle call processing adequately.

•These make the handoff occur at proper location and

eliminates interference in the system.
