• A monitor or a display  is an  electronic visual
display for computers.

• Advent of new technologies have made monitors

more compact, more eye friendly and easy to use.
Monitor Specifications

• Size

• Resolution

• Refresh rate

4
Resolution:
• Resolution refers to the sharpness or clarity (Clearness) of an
image. A monitor’s resolution is determined by the number of
pixels on the screen.

Example: a resolution of 640 X 480 means that there are 640

pixels horizontally across the screen and 480 pixels vertically
down the screen.

5
Size:
• A monitor’s size affects how well you can see images.

Monitors are available from 12” to 42”, which you can

pick according to your needs and space you have.
Refresh Rate
• A monitor’s refresh rate is the number of times per second that the
electronic guns scan every pixel on the screen.
• If the screen is not refreshed often enough, it appears to spark
(Flashes), and spark is one of the main causes of eyestrain.

• Refresh rate is measured in Hertz (Hz), or in cycles per second.

• This means that if a monitor’s refresh rate is 100 Hz, it

refreshes its pixels 100 times every second.

Types of monitors

CRT Monitors

LCD Monitors
CRT Monitors
 Cathode Ray Tube, or in simpler words CRT, are
oldest among all available models these days.

 These monitors function on the old cathode ray

tube phenomena.
CRT positives and negatives
 Easily available
 Cheaper
 Angle view

 Weight
 Size
 More power

• That is why, experts on energy do not advice to buy CRT.

LCD Monitors
 Liquid crystal display monitors are not the latest but the
later version than CRT monitors.

 Unlike CRT monitors, these monitors are compact and

thin.

 These monitors do consume low and almost have no

dependency on backlight technology.
 Due to its quality of consuming low power and
compact in shape and size, it has been well
adapted in the time when energy efficiency is
the main concern.

Software
The programs or package those are able to run and
perform the tasks on a computer system are called
software, or software is the program of a computer that
is able to see but do not touchable.

Kinds of Software

System Application Language Utility

Software Software Software Software

19
System Software

• It enables the computer hardware to communicate

and operate with the computer software.

• Without an operating system, a computer and

software programs would be useless.

Example: Microsoft WINDOWS

 Microsoft DOS

 Linux

20
• Users can interact directly with the operating system
through a user interface such as a command
language or a graphical user interface (GUI).

21
Operating system is divided in two
categories

• 1. CLI

• 2. GUI

22
• CLI: Command Line Interface.
They are those kinds of operating system, which is
operating by command lines through a path.

These Command lines are like Instructions.

In CLI operating system, Mouse is not involved.

• Ex: Dos

23
• GUI: Graphic User Interface

• They are operating other software graphically, not by

command.

• In GUI operating System, Mouse is involved.

• Ex: Windows Operating System

Device Manager attached to the computer, and control what
device drivers are used.

Allows for the rolling back of system files, registry keys,

System Restore installed programs, etc., to a previous state in the event
of a system failure.

Windows Update packs, device drivers, and other updates. A variation called
Microsoft Update also provides software updates for
several Microsoft products.

Provides an interface for accessing the file systems,

Windows Explorer launching applications, and performing common tasks
such as viewing and printing pictures

Starting with Windows Vista, search is a tightly shell-

Windows Search integrated component of Windows. A downloadable
Windows Desktop Search software is available for
Windows XP and older versions.

Start Manu Serves as the central launching point for applications.

27
Device Driver

• It is a component that Windows uses to provide I/O services

for and interact with an underlying device, such as a printer,
scanner, VGA.

• Rather than access the device directly, Windows loads device

drivers and calls functions in the drivers to carry out actions
on the device.

29
Common PC Errors
Power Outage:
• Today there are many sudden power outages, voltage problems and spikes that can damage
computers.

• These damages cause many technical and software problems and interrupt your work.

• This leads to loss of data, damage to the hardware

• This solution to this trouble is to use of uninterrupted power supply (UPS).

• The UPS can provide a constant flow of energy to the computer, even if you encounter a
sudden power outage.

• This will provide you with ample time to

save your data and shut down your PC

30
Computer Performance has Slowed Down

• You may notice your computer has slowed down considerably

and even a simple command execution takes ages.
• This is because your computer is loaded with unnecessary
files, fragmented data, corrupted registry, spyware programs
• Thus, you need to manage your programs and delete
unnecessary data and software that you do not use or need,

Computer Monitor Displays Unclear Images

A computer monitor is the display unit of the computer that is sensitive to electro-
magnetic radiations.

These electro-magnetic radiations are transmitted from the TV, radio, microwaves,
dishwashers, washing machines, speakers, etc. Mobile phones transmit electro-
magnetic radiations that is one of the main cause of monitor displaying fuzzy images.

Thus, move away these disturbances away from the monitor and this problem with
computer monitor will be fixed.

33
Out of Memory
This error occurs when the system has run out of memory or tries to load a
file too large to store in RAM.

The fix is to close some programs, or install more memory.

File not found

The file concerned may have been damaged, moved, deleted, or a bug
may have caused the error. Alternatively, the file simply might not exist, or
the user has mistyped its name.

34
Low Disk Space

This error occurs when the hard drive is (nearly) full.

To fix this, the user should close some programs and delete some files or
get a bigger hard drive.

Access denied
This error occurs if the user has insufficient privileges to a file, or if it has
been locked by some program or user.

35
Low Virtual Memory

• Do you keep getting an annoying message that says 'system running low
on virtual memory'? If yes, it means your computer is running short of
RAM, that is, Random Access Memory.

• So, to solve this problem, you need to increase the size of your computer
memory. Windows 7 users need at least 1 GB of RAM, Windows Vista
needs 512 MB of Ram and Windows XP requires minimum 256 MB RAM.
Visit your local computer dealer and purchase more memory from him.
