What is Sustainability?

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without

compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs.

Sustainability encompasses social issues, such as

improvements in working conditions and
remuneration for workers, as well
as environmental ones, including the reduction of the
industry’s waste stream, and decreases in water
pollution and contributions to greenhouse gas
emissions.
Sustainable fashion

• Sustainable fashion is a movement and process of fostering

change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater
ecological integrity and social justice.

• An adjacent term to sustainable fashion is eco fashion.

• Opting for fibers and materials that are organic, recycled, or

repurposed, limiting harmful chemicals/dyes, reducing
energy/water usage and waste, and overall choosing low-impact
options wherever possible.
The Purpose of sustainable fashion

The goal of sustainable fashion is to create flourishing ecosystems and communities through its activity.

Slow fashion is the alternative to fast fashion, and promotes a slower,
more sustainable approach. It supports buying vintage or second hand
clothes, redesigning old clothes, shopping from smaller producers, and

concepts that are season-less.

What Are Fashion Manufacturers Doing To Improve
Sustainability?

In July 2018, 10 different UN organizations established a  UN Alliance on Sustainable

Fashion, which focuses on promoting projects and policies to ensure the fashion industry
contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. As a result, manufacturers
are now turning their attention towards how they can improve the sustainability of their
production processes.

Realizing that garment industries are a major contributor to the fabric

waste that chokes landfills, Kriti decided to upcycle this waste. The
idea was to inspire people to buy more consciously created
products, and while the change may be slow it is definitely
happening.
