CHAPTER 15

PRE-FABRICATED CONSTRUCTION

Prepared by:
ELLEN-ZYRA R. CAPILLAS
SECTION 1501. Prefabricated
Assembly
a. Prefabricated assembly is a structural unit, the integral parts
of which have been built up or assembled prior to
incorporation in the building.

The prefabrication as defined will be done in two stages:

1. Manufacturing at factory condition and;
2. Erection of components at the required location.
Precast Concrete Structural Elements
■ Precast slabs

■ Precast beams and girders

Precast Concrete Structural Elements
■ Precast columns

■ Precast walls
Precast Concrete Structural Elements
■ Precast stairs

■ Precast footings
Types of Precast System

■ Open Prefab System

• Partial Prefab Open System
• Full Prefab Open System
Types of Precast System
■ Large-panel system
Types of Precast System
■ Frame system
Types of Precast System
■ Lift-slab system
Advantages
■ High quality product
■ Labor related savings
■ Savings in time
■ Overall efficiency is greatly increased
■ Mass production is easier and quick
■ Protected and controlled production environment
■ Potential for lower production costs and other cost  savings
■ Independence of climatic conditions
■ The disruption of traffic is avoided
■ Ensures high degree of Safety
Disadvantages
■ Careful handling of prefabricated components such as concrete
panels or steel and glass panels is required.
■ Attention has to be paid to the strength and corrosion-resistance of
the joining of prefabricated sections to avoid failure of the joint.
■ Similarly, leaks can form at joints in prefabricated components.
■ Transportation costs may be higher for voluminous prefabricated
sections than for the materials of which they are made, which can
often be packed more compactly.
■ Large prefabricated sections require heavy-duty cranes and
precision measurement and handling to place in position.
b. The Secretary shall prescribe special tests to determine the
structural adequacy, durability, soundness, weather and fire
resistance of prefabricated assemblies.
c. Every device or system to connect prefabricated assemblies
shall be capable of developing the strength of the different
members as an integral structure, Except, in the case of
members forming part of a structural frame as specified in this
Code. Anchorages and connections between members and
the supporting elements of the structure or walls shall be
capable of withstanding all probable external and internal
forces or other conditions for a structurally adequate
construction. In structural design, proper allowances shall be
made for any material to be displaced or removed for the
installation of pipes, conduits, or other equipment.
d. Placement of prefabricated assemblies shall be
inspected to determine compliance with this
Code.
