he/she follows and imitates Christ, doing everything in reference
to Him.

final good.
PAULINIAN CORE VALUES

Charity. Urged on by the love of Christ, the Paulinian is warm,

hospitable, and "all to all", especially to the underprivileged.
PAULINIAN CORE VALUES

Charism.
There are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit. There are
different kinds of service, but the same Lord. (1 Cor. 12:4-5)
CHARISM
• a divinely conferred gift or power (Spiritual gift).
• a spiritual power or personal quality that gives an individual influence or authority over
• large numbers of people.
• the special virtue of an office, function, position, etc., that confers or
is thought to confer on the person holding it.
• an unusual ability for leadership, worthiness of veneration, or the like.
CHARISM
• Literally "gifts of grace" (charismata), described by St. Paul as
gratuitous blessings of an extraordinary and transitory nature
conferred directly for the good of others. Indirectly they may
also benefit the one who possesses the charisms, but their
immediate purpose is for the spiritual welfare of the Christian
community.
CHARISM
• Five categories, based on the Pauline writings and the Acts of the Apostles
charism of instruction,
charism of administration,
charism of miracles,
charism of service, and
charism of prayer.
CHARISM
• ADMINISTRATION: 1 Cor. 12:28 - to steer the body toward the accomplishment of God-
given goals and directives by planning, organizing, and supervising others.
• (Greek Word: kubernesis - to steer, guide)
CHARISM
• APOSTLE: Eph. 4:11; 1 Cor. 12:28 - to be sent forth to new frontiers with the gospel,
providing leadership over church bodies and maintaining authority over spiritual matters
pertaining to the church.
• (Greek Word: apostolos - 'apo'=from 'stello'=send; one sent forth)
• “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Mt 28: 19-
20)
CHARISM
• CELIBACY: 1 Cor. 7:7,8 - to voluntarily remain single without regret and with the ability
to maintain controlled sexual impulses so as to serve the Lord without distraction.
CELIBACY
• Can. 277
Clerics are obliged to observe perfect and perpetual continence for the sake of
the Kingdom of God, and are therefore bound to celibacy.
Celibacy is a special gift of God by which sacred ministers can more easily
remain close to Christ with an undivided heart, and can dedicate themselves more freely to
the service of God and their neighbour.
Clerics are to behave with due prudence in relation to persons whose company can be
a danger to their obligation of preserving continence or can lead to scandal of the faithful.
CHARISM
• DISCERNMENT: 1 Cor. 12:10 - to clearly distinguish truth from error by judging whether
the behavior or teaching is from God, Satan, human error, or human power.
DISCERNMENT
• People with the gift of discernment are often quick to see things that others don’t see or
don’t see right away.  They can therefore be misunderstood.
• When you identify someone in your midst with the spiritual gift of discernment, pay careful
attention to their perceptions. Don’t be too quick to write off what they are saying because
you don’t understand or agree.
DISCERNMENT
• If you have the gift of discernment, pay close attention to how you share your perceptions
with others.  Though you are usually right, don’t become arrogant and obnoxious about it.
Remember to speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15).  Seek to emulate Jesus who was full of
both grace and truth  (Jn. 1:14).
CHARISM
• EVANGELISM: Eph. 4:11 - to be a messenger of the good news of the Gospel (Greek
Word: euaggelistes - preacher of gospel; eu=well, angelos=message - messenger of good)
EVANGELISM
• Wherever they are, people with the gift of evangelism seem to have their spiritual radar up,
eager to tell people about Jesus.
• People tend to have more passion and invest more time into areas for which they are gifted.
We need to guard against projecting our gifts onto others who are not gifted like we are,
expecting them to react the same way we do, to have the same passion and time commitment
we do, to make it as much of a priority, or to do so with as much ease.
EVANGELISM
• Yet, those who are not so gifted must guard against using their lack of gifting as an excuse to
neglect their responsibilities as believers.
• Though not everyone has the spiritual gift of evangelism, all believers are responsible and
privileged to share Jesus with others.  Timothy did not appear to have the gift of evangelism
but the Apostle Paul told him to nonetheless “do the work of an evangelist” (2 Tim. 4:5).
CHARISM
• EXHORTATION: Rom. 12:8 - to come along side of someone with words of
encouragement, comfort, consolation, and counsel to help them be all God wants them to be.
• (Greek Word: paraklesis - calling to one's side)
• (e.g) Counselling, Teaching, Speaking
CHARISM
• FAITH: 1 Cor. 12:8-10 - to be firmly persuaded of God's power and promises to accomplish
His will and purpose and to display such a confidence in Him and His Word that
circumstances and obstacles do not shake that conviction.
• (Genesis 22: 1-19) Abraham’s Faith
CHARISM
• GIVING: Rom. 12:8 - to share what material resources you have with liberality and
cheerfulness without thought of return.
GIVING
• The Cheerful Giver (2 Cor 9: 6-7)
• “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
CHARISM
• HEALINGS: 1 Cor. 12:9,28,30 - to be used as a means through which God makes people
whole either physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.
• (e.g.) Counselling, Letting go of the past, Prayer
CHARISM
• HELPS: 1 Cor. 12:28 - to render support or assistance to others in the body so as to free
them up for ministry.
CHARISM
• HOSPITALITY: 1 Pet. 4:9,10 - to warmly welcome people, even strangers, into one's home
or church as a means of serving those in need of food or lodging.
• (Greek Word: 'philos'=love; 'xenos'=stranger; philoxenos - love of strangers)
CHARISM
• KNOWLEDGE: 1 Cor. 12:8 - to seek to learn as much about the Bible as possible through
the gathering of much information and the analyzing of that data.
CHARISM
• LEADERSHIP: Rom. 12:8 - to stand before the people in such a way as to attend to the
direction of the body with such care and diligence so as to motivate others to get involved in
the accomplishment of these goals.
CHARISM
• MARTYRDOM: 1 Cor. 13:3 - to give over one's life to suffer or to be put to death for the
cause of Christ.
• The Filipino saints Lorenzo Ruiz and Pedro Calungsod.
CHARISM
• MERCY: Rom. 12:8 - to be sensitive toward those who are suffering, whether physically,
mentally, or emotionally, so as to feel genuine sympathy with their misery, speaking words
of compassion but more so caring for them with deeds of love to help alleviate their distress.
CHARISM
• MIRACLES: 1 Cor. 12:10,28 - to be enabled by God to perform mighty deeds which
witnesses acknowledge to be of supernatural origin and means.
CHARISM
• MISSIONARY: Eph. 3:6-8 - to be able to minister in another culture, to promote
Christianity in a foreign country.
CHARISM
• PROPHECY: Rom. 12:6; 1 Cor. 12:10; Eph. 4:11 - to speak forth the message of God to
His people
• (Greek Word: 'pro'=forth; 'phemi'=to speak; prophetes - the forth-telling of the will of God;)
CHARISM
• SERVICE: Rom. 12:7 - to identify undone tasks in God's work, however menial, and use
available resources to get the job done.
• (Greek Word: 'diako'=to run errands; diakonia - deacon, attendant)
• Jesus came TO SERVE and not to be served, to show us our kingly mission.
SERVICE
• Everyone’s contribution to the Body of Christ is important and needed.  Whether we have
speaking gifts or serving gifts, we need to faithfully exercise them with the strength He
provides to His glory.  All gifts are distributed on the basis of grace and to be administered
as His grace into the lives of others.  People with the spiritual gift of service should not view
themselves as any less important or less needed in the Body of Christ.  Watch for comparing
yourself with someone else.
SERVICE
• If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not
for that reason cease to be part of the body.  And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an
eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If
the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were
an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts in the
body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.  (1 Cor. 12:15-18)
SERVICE
• Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering
God’s grace in its various forms.  If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God
provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. If anyone speaks, he
should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with
the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To
him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.  (1 Pet. 4:10-11)
CHARISM
• TEACHING: Rom. 12:7; 1 Cor. 12:28; Eph. 4:11 - to instruct others in the Sacred Scripture
in a logical, systematic way so as to communicate pertinent information for true
understanding and growth.
• (e.g.) Christian Education, Religious Education, Bible Study Sessions
CHARISM
• TONGUES: 1 Cor. 12:10; 14:27-28 - to speak in a language not previously learned so
unbelievers can hear God's message in their own language or the body be edified.
• INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES: 1 Cor. 12:10; 14:27, 28 - to translate the message of
someone who has spoken in tongues.
CHARISM
• VOLUNTARY POVERTY: 1 Cor. 13:3 - to purposely live an impoverished lifestyle to
serve and aid others with your material resources.
CHARISM
• WISDOM: 1 Cor. 12:8 - to apply knowledge to life in such a way as to make spiritual truths
quite relevant and practical in proper decision-making and daily life situations.
• Each one should use whatever gift he has received to
serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its
various forms. (1 Pet. 4:10)

Just as each of us has one body with many members,
and these members do not all have the same function,
so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each
member belongs to all the others. We have different
gifts, according to the grace given us. (Romans 12:4-6a)
