2 STUDY SKILLS

1 • Proper study skills are necessary for good performance in tests


and examinations.

Some of the study skills are:


• Efficient concentrating, remembering.
• Making good notes.
• Organizing study times.
• Finding a convenient place/location for study.
• Using library effectively.
• Writing examinations.
• Communicating effectively.
• Purposeful reading.

Timing of Study:
• Prepare a list of targets for each week and day.
• Prepare a timetable for yourself.
• Identify the time of the day when you are not available for
study.
• Get on with studies as early as possible.
Some considerations for time tabling are:
• Have
2 some breaks during your study. Plan for such breaks.
• Study when you are in study mood.
• It is not how long you study that is important but how well you
study.
• Do not delay studying. Provide time for daily review.
• Avoid long durations of study. Studying / learning topic at the very
end.
• Postponing studies for one reason or the other.
• Taking too many risky chances by selective reading of few topics
only. Burning the mid night oil.
• Finding excuses for not having proper study plans. Mass reading
when nearing the time of exam.
• Attempt to learn 'it' at a time nearer the exam time.
• Cramming without understanding.

Revision:
• Systematic Revision is an important clue for success in the exam.
• Revision is practice rather than reading.

Tips for Revision


• For each chapter prepare 'exam type' questions.
• Periodically refer to the old question papers.
• Make shrewd guess of likely questions for the exam.
• Prepare a timetable for study nearer the exam.
• Revision periods may be kept short.
• You may pair with an accomplished friend.
• Discuss the questions and answers with the friend. This would help in getting
feed back on your preparation.
• Do not get stuck to the same subject while revising.
• Do not depend too much upon bazaar notes or guides.
• Drawings and figures must be written in the revision.
• On the previous day of the exam you should not do too much of revision.

2 POINTS TO BE REMEMBERED:

2.1 JUST BEFORE THE EXAM:


• Be sure where the exam is being held.
• Reach the place well on time.
• Avoid last minute gossip.
• Avoid scanning your notes while going to the exam hall.
• Make sure you have all accessories such as pen, pencils etc.
2.2 DURING THE EXAM:
• Do not rush through answering as soon as you get the Question paper.

• Read the instructions carefully which would give you information about the
length of answer, units to use, how to choose choices etc.
• Read through all questions given in the paper. Put a mark on all those you can
answer very well.
• Budget the time properly.
• Write legibly and organize your answers properly.
• Diagrams are time consuming. You have to ensure that these are "cost
effective".
• Make sure that you do not spend too much time on diagrams.
• Your practice for drawing the diagrams will be helpful to complete the answer
in time and legibly.
• Make it easy for the examiner to read your answers. Write' laying out clearly
the structure of your answers, underline with colour pens headings, side
headings, key points in the answer sheet. This will attract the attention of the
value you' are likely to get more marks.
• Avoid too many unnecessary details.
2.3 AFTER THE EXAM:
• Do not carry out any serious post mortem of the exam you have just finished.

3 GOOD STUDY HABITS:
• Study in well lit environment.
• Have a comfortable place for study.
• Study the important and difficult subject first.
• Make summaries, recite and recall, review and review again.
• Avoid distractions
• Concentrate on studies.
• Choose a suitable partner. Quiz with each other, exchange notes.
• Set time limits and try to achieve.
• Use the library. Review notes at the earliest.
• Guess questions but do not become a slave to it.
• Compare your notes with text.
• Take scheduled breaks, relax.
• Do not cram. Develop an attitude I can achieve and I will"
