inTroducTion
This Caterpillar Fundamental English Parts Distribution and use module teaches
general terms used in parts distribution and use of parts.
The module introduces several nouns, as well as verbs, adjectives, and
additional words related to the theme.
Critical words to understand are:
• to fill: Usually means the action to make something full. To fill an order is to
get all the items in the order together and ship it to the person who made the
order.
• field: An expression for any location outside the permanent facility of the
dealer. For example: Field service is service done outside the shop. It does
not mean the agricultural field.
• Facility: An establishment, shop, office, place of business or operation -
usually a structure or building.
• operator: The person who operates or drives a machine, or operates a
machine tool. (This has nothing to do with medical surgery.)

Several words in this module relate to the distribution of parts as follows:
• Factory: A building or group of buildings where products are made.
• place/location: The area or space occupied by or intended for something.
• origin: A point or place at which something is provided.
• Depot/Storage: A building for storing goods.
• transport: The act of moving things from one place to another.
• package: A wrapped or sealed case containing an item or set of items.
• mail: Material sent or carried in the postal system.
• Shipment: A load of goods that are being sent to a customer, etc.
• Distributor: Person or company that supplies stores or businesses with
goods.
• Customer: Someone who buys goods or services from a business.
The user is the person or firm that actually uses the machines. The customer
is the person who purchases the machine from the dealer. A customer is also
a person who buys parts and service.

Parts are used in industry, marine, and construction applications. New
terms related to this topic include:
• application: A use to which something is put.
• industry: A group of businesses that provide a particular product or service.
- An example of an industrial application is a stationary engine for a pump.
• marine: Of or relating to the sea, or doing business by sea.
- An installation on a boat is an example of a marine application.
Caterpillar parts are used by dealers, customers, machine users, technicians,
and machine operators in all parts of the world.
Locations where parts can be found or transported include:
• Main or branch parts facility (parts department).
• Dealer service shop (service department).
• Delivered to the construction job or location in the
field.
