Bulldozer
Dozers are machines designed primarily for cutting and pushing
material over relatively short distances. They consists of a tractor with a
front mounted blade, controlled by hydraulic cylinders to vary the depth of
cut and rate of leveling depending on the material and application.

Crawler dozers equipped with special clearing blades are excellent

machines for loud clearing. Heavy ripping of rock is accomplished by
crawled dozers equipped with rear mounted rippers because of the power
and tractive force they can develop.
Purposes of Bulldozer
 To clear the site of work.
 To make the land level.
 To prepare pilot roads through mountains and hard ground.
 To excavate the material and haul for a distance of about 100 meters.
 Spreading earth.
 Backfilling trenches.
 Maintaining haul roads.
Classification of Bulldozer
 A bulldozer may either cable controlled or hydraulic controlled.
 Depending upon the mountings, a bulldozer may be crawler tractor

mounted bulldozer or wheel tractor mounted bulldozer. The latter can attain
higher travel speeds on the job and can be moved on paved floors without
causing damage to the floors.
 Depending on the nature of blade, the bulldozer may be front – casting

dozer or angle – dozer. In the former case, the blade is fixed perpendicular to
the direction of travel. In case of angle – dozers, the blade is fixed at an angle
with the direction of travel. The front – casting dozer will move the earth in
forward direction, the angle – dozer will push the earth on one side in the
forward direction. A bulldozer may be provided with blades of such
arrangement that it can be converted into either of the two types.
Crawler Mounted Dozer
 It delivers greater tractive effort especially when operating in soft grounds
as loose or muddy soil.
 It has capacity to travel over muddy surfaces. It can work on variety of
soils.
 It has the ability to operate in rocky formation, where rubber tires might be
damaged seriously.
 It has the ability to travel on rough surface, which may reduce the cost of
maintaining the hauling roads.
 Greater flotation due to the lower pressure under the track. It is good for
short distance jobs.
 Greater use on versatility jobs. i.e. greater use on different types of jobs.
 Can push large blade loads.
 It’s speed is slow about 8 to 16 kmph.
Wheel Mounted Dozer
 It provides higher travel speed from 13 to 42 kmph on the job or from one
job to another job.
 It eliminates the necessity of hauling equipment required to transport the
dozer to the job.
 Greater output, especially when considerable travel is necessary.
 Less fatigue to operator. It is good for long travel distances.
 It can travel on paved highways without damaging the surface.
 It is best for handling loose soils.
 It can push moderate blade load.
Tilt
This movement takes place within the vertical plane of the blade.
Tilting enables the concentration of dozer driving power on a limites
portion of the length of the blade.

Pitch
This is a pivotal movement about the point of connection between the
dozer and the blade. When the top of the blade pitched forward, the bottom
edge moves back. This increases the angle of cutting edge attack.
Angling
Turning the blade in such a way that it is not perpendicular to the
direction of travel of the dozer is known angling. Angling causes the
pushed material to roll off the trailing end of the blade. This process of
rolling material off one end of the blade is known as side casting.
