BAND WIDTH
• Bandwidth is the difference between upper and lower
frequency limits of the signal.

• It is also defined as the frequency range occupied by a

signal bandwidth requirement for transmission of
various signals is different for each signal.
• Bandwidth measures how much data can be
transferred along the communication channel.
• Bandwidth is officially measured as frequency
• Bandwidth is generally reported in Bps OR Mbps.
Types of bandwidth
Base band
 Base band is used in Ethernet connections the whole
band is used to transfer just one signal of information.
It will allow us to either send or receive but not both
at the same time.
Base band uses very low frequency waves so that it is
used for short distance communication.
Broad band

It transmits a number of signals to the whole band.

It is used in TV’s and radios.
It will allow to send and receive at the same time.
It uses very high frequency waves it will transmit the
information signal so it can travel long distances.
IMPORTANCE
• In a communication channel, Bandwidth is the range
of frequency allowed or possible in which information
passes.
• Bandwidth is treated as a resource in communication
system.
• High data rate signal has high frequency content, so
we need high bandwidth channel to transmit them.
Higher bandwidth:
• In higher bandwidth ,more data flows per second and
is reached to destination faster as speed of data
transfer is more.

Lower bandwidth:
• In lower bandwidth, less data will flow per second
where as speed of data transfer is less.
BANDWIDTH FOR VOICE SPEECH
SIGNAL
• The frequency is of the range 300Hz – 3000Hz are
known as voice frequencies.

The upper frequency (FH) is 3000Hz.

The lower frequency (FL) is 300Hz.
Bandwidth = FH –FL =3000 – 300
=2700Hz
BANDWIDTH FOR MUSIC SIGNALS
• For high quality music transmission a frequency range
of 20Hz – 15KHz is required.

Bandwidth = FH – FL = 15000 – 20
= 14980Hz
Music transmission Band width required is 14980 Hz.
WIFI BANDWIDTH
• WIFI is the name of a popular wireless networking
technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless
high speed internet and network connections.

• A common misconception is that the term WIFI is

short for wireless fidelity.
• The maximum bandwidth is 240 Mbps vs 600Mbps
over 5GHz.
• You will get faster WIFI speeds and avoid interference.
• Devices that can use WIFI technologies includes
desktops , laptops, smart phones etc…..
• Hotspot has a range of 20 meters indoors and a great
range outdoors.
MATLAB IMPLEMENTATION
To find the bandwidth the signal x=50sinc(125(t−10))^2
APPLICATIONS OF SIGNAL BANDWIDTH

Ultrasound:
• Medical uses of sound signals with a frequency of more than 20000Hz
is done to determine the health and condition of internal organs or
during a pregnancy to determine the growth of a foetus.
Radar:
• An acronym for “Radio Detection And Ranging”; RADAR uses sounds
of very high frequencies typically of the order of 1 to 3 MHz and is
used in applications related to space, defense, engineering, metal
studies etc.
ADVANTAGES OF BANDWIDTH
• Faster application performance
• Increased data transfer capability
• Faster data transfer speed
• Stream video faster
DISADVANTAGES OF BANDWIDTH
• The broadband connection cost is expensive.
• The broadband connection increase the speed capability of internet
but does not guarantee the speed.
• High bandwidth affects the nature.
CONCLUSION
• The bandwidth is used for many applications.
• The more the bandwidth is the faster the data can be
transfer.
• Similarly the lower the bandwidth ,data flow will be
slow.
