Assistive
Technology
• Sip-and-Puff System (SNP)
• Mainly for those who are quadriplegic , this technology offers a
completely hands-free solution to education and grants the
student the freedom to browse a computer with little to no
assistance.
• It is devised of a dual switch, gooseneck, and a straw where the user
can puff/sip to control movements as well as use a combination of
moving the joystick with their mouth and sipping/puffing to input
different commands.
• While the uses are infinite, the ability to make disabled students not
feel reliant on a teacher/caregiver makes this assistive technology
shine.
Implementing Sip
and Puff Systems
• Purchasing a Sip and Puff System is fairly expensive as one
unit can retail anywhere from $400-$600.
• A popular version of this adaptive technology is the
Quadstick, which lets quadriplegics play video games without
the use of a traditional controller.
• With the simple use of a USB drive, the sip and puff system
can plug into any computer, granting the user access
instantaneously with preset settings.
• Further research can be looked at by visiting quadstick.com,
specialneedscomputers.ca and compusult.com
• The Sip and Puff system is ideal for disabled students and/or
students with extremely limited mobility, granting them the
freedom to express themselves digitally.
Emerging
Technology
• Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)
• A MOOC is essentially an online course where the main
focus is on networking with other like-minded
individuals to sustain life-long learning.
• MOOC’s are excellent to provide a free or reduced-price
education on a topic the student is the most interested
in.
• What’s great about MOOC’s is that all of the coursework
is shared among the students meaning that each
student can view every project that has been completed.
Implementing
MOOC’s
• These courses are mainly directed toward Secondary Education, college
students and teachers.
• The price for MOOC’s can be absolutely free to the average cost of a
college course. Although some charge for MOOC’s finding free MOOC’s is
very easy and user friendly.
• The average course lasts about 4-8 weeks and may require about 1-8
hours a week.
• The key to picking a MOOC is to determine how much time is available to
the student and how much they want to get out of the experience.
• Each course is taught by a certified professional and can range from
public speakers, professors, scholars, scientists etc.

Innovative Uses

• Quizlet
• The basis of Quizlet is to create flash cards
on any subject matter, then presents those
flash cards in a numerous amount of ways.
• This can be in the form of a test, matching
the answers, typing out each answer, etc.
• By constantly shifting the forms of
information, we can improve our retention
of the subjects and gain a deeper
understanding of the content.
Implementing Quizlet

• Quizlet is extremely user friendly and makes it easy for students and
teachers to create study sets for their personal use and class use.
• While Quizlet is free, there is an option for $4 a month to upgrade to
Quizlet Plus which includes ad free studying, scanning documents
and personalized study paths. This is entirely optional, but is great for
anyone struggling with the subject matter.
• I personally use Quizlet for my studies and even for work related
tasks. As a barista I memorize certain recipes so I developed a Quizlet
my coworkers can study from.
