What is a noun? What is a noun phrase?


■ A person, place, or thing ■ “A noun phrase is a noun plus any words
describing it” (Weaver 98).
■ “A noun designates someone or
something” (Weaver 97). ■ According to EnglishSentences.com, “A
noun phrase is a group of words that work
■ “A noun is a single word” (Weaver together to name and describe a person,
98). place, thing, or idea. When we look at the
structure of writing, we treat a noun
phrase the same way we treat a common
noun.”
Examples of Noun Phrases

■ “‘Insufficient facts always invite danger’” – Spock (Star Trek: The Original Series)
■ “‘I am not a merry man!’” – Worf (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
