FACTS
 Facts are statements that can be checked or
proved. √
 We can check facts by conducting some sort of
experiment, observation, or by verifying
(checking) the fact with a source document.
 Facts often contain numbers, dates, or ages.
 Facts might include specific information about
a person, place or thing.
OPINIONS
 An opinion is a statement that cannot be proved
or checked.
 It tells what someone thinks, feels, or believes.

 Clue words for opinion statements are:

think, feel, believe, seem

always, never, all, none, most, least, best,
greatest, worst
This can be identified with
the use of value words and
persuasive languages.
Value Words subjectively
evaluate or interpret reality.
They can give or take away
value from something.
Philippines is a good
place to spend a
vacation with family.
Persuasive language is used by an
author to persuade others with his
or her own opinion. This uses
modals such as should, ought to
and must do.
You should go and visit
Philippines to spend
your vacation with your
family.

In addition, there are certain words
that will warn you that you are
being given an opinion and not a
fact. Some of those are: maybe,
perhaps, best/worst, probably,
apparently and other suggestive
words.
You are probably right
when you decide to visit
beautiful places here in
the Philippines.
HINTS FOR DECIDING IF A STATEMENT

“Does this statement tell what someone
thinks, feels, or believes?”
 Look in the answer choice for clue words
that signal an opinion
OPINION EXAMPLES:

OPINION STATEMENT?

live.

dessert.
 Nearly 50% of our teens love Kpop.

 Sarah Geronimo is the greatest singer ever!

Do you usually watch
television or listen to the
radio when you want to be
updated with the current
news?”
Are you aware that some
of them are fact and
some are just an opinion
based on their source?
How important it is to
know the difference of
fact from opinion
based on what they
hear?
WHEN YOU’RE WRITING….

 Remember:
 Facts are often used to
support opinions.
 Good opinions are
based on facts, but they
are still opinions.
IDENTIFY THE FACT/OPINIONS IN AN ARTICLE

Everglades National Park is an amazing place. Located near the southern

tip of Florida, it is a wilderness wetlands of swamps, marshes, and lakes. The
park is the home of animals, including many rare ones such as the Florida
panther. The most exciting ways to see the park are on foot or by canoe. At
times, park rangers lead group hikes right into the water itself. Hikers carry
poles to help them keep their balance in the water. Although alligators live in
the park, they tend to avoid humans and don’t bother hikers. Hiking at night
is especially fun to do. That is when many animals come out to feed. Canoe
rides are rewarding too. Canoes allow visitors to see the park and some of its
inhabitants up close in their natural habitat. Alligators, turtles, bald eagles,
manatees, and snakes are just a few of the creatures at home in Everglades
National Park.
WHAT IS THE AUTHOR’S OPINION OF THE

eagles.

The most admired person in American history is Thomas
Jefferson. At the age of nine, Jefferson studied Latin, Greek, and
French. I think it is astonishing to learn three languages at the
age of nine! He entered college at the age of sixteen. After
graduating from college, Jefferson studied to become a lawyer.
He also became an architect, and he designed his own home,
Monticello. It is the most amazing home you will ever see.
Jefferson invented many things for his house that other houses of
that time did not have. For example, Monticello had a
dumbwaiter, a small elevator to move food from one floor to
another. He also invented the swivel chair. In my opinion, he is
the smartest man who ever lived.
By partners, draw an organizer and explain the author’s opinion.
