What is a Formal Business Letter?
● It is basically a one page document explaining why you are the most suitable
candidate for a job
● It’s purpose is to briefly introduce you and summarize your professional
background.
Elements of a Block Style Formal Business Letter
1. Your correct contact information
2. Date
3. Inside address
4. Salutation
5. The body should include
a. First paragraph - purpose for writing as well as the position you are applying for
b. Middle paragraph(s) - what you have to offer to the employer. It is important that
you link your qualifications and skills to the job requirements.
c. Last paragraph - conclude by thanking the employer and stating how you can be contacted.
6. Complimentary closing

Basic Formatting
The following are basic formatting which may be considered when drafting a cover
letter:
● Times New Roman or similar Font.
● Size 12 Font. Too small may strain eyes.
● Margins of 1 inch
● Maintain neatness with alignment throughout document, preferably fully
justified.
