Job Application
A job application letter (also known as a cover letter) is a letter you send with your resume to provide
information on your skills and experience. This letter is your chance to “sell” yourself to an employer,
explaining why you are an ideal candidate for a position.
When you write your job application letter, it’s essential to pay close attention to formatting. Make sure
your cover letter is formatted properly and is free from errors before you send.
Before you start writing a cover letter, you should familiarize yourself with the document’s purpose. A
cover letter is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills.
The letter provides detailed information on why you are qualified for the job you are applying for. Don’t
simply repeat what’s on your resume -- rather, including specific information on why you’re a strong
match for the employer’s job requirements will help. Think of your cover letter as a sales pitch that will
market your credentials and help you get the interview. As such, you want to make sure your cover letter
makes the best impression on the person who is reviewing it.
A cover letter typically accompanies each resume you send out. Employers use cover letters as a way
to screen applicants for available jobs and to determine which candidates they would like to interview. It
will show that you have put some extra effort into your application.
There are three general types of cover letters. Choose a type of letter that matches your reason for
writing.
When you are applying for a job that has been posted by a company that’s hiring, you will be using the
“application letter” style.
When applying for a job, a cover letter should be sent or posted with your resume or curriculum vitae.
Typically, a cover letter is a one-page document that explains to the hiring manager why you are an
ideal candidate for the job. It goes beyond your resume to explain in detail how you could add value to
the company.
It can be daunting to write a cover letter that really emphasizes the qualities you have to offer an
employer. Taking stock in your value and then working to highlight those traits succinctly in a well-
written letter can be a great confidence-builder. You’ll know your letter is perfect when you read it and
think, “Hey, I would interview me!”
Keep in mind that your cover letter doesn't have to be boring. Taking some time to showcase your
personality and how it will be an asset to the employer can help your application get noticed. Follow
these tips on how to write an effective cover letter.
One useful way to tailor your letter to the job is to use keywords from the job posting. Circle any words
from the job posting that seem critical to the job, such as specific skills or qualifications. Try to use
some of these words in your letter. This way, at a glance, the employer can see that you match the
requirements of the job.
Think of concrete ways to prove you will add value to the company. Include examples of specific
accomplishments from previous jobs. For example, if you helped reduce turnover by 10% at your last
company, or if you implemented a filing strategy that reduced file errors by 15%, include this
information. Try to quantify your successes when possible to clearly demonstrate how you could add
value to the company.
1. Do not copy your resume. The purpose of this letter is to convince the hiring manager that you’re a
strong candidate and to highlight your relevant experience and abilities. Your application letter
should show how exactly your background makes you a good fit for a particular position. In contrast,
your resume is a general record of your experience, education, and accomplishments.1
2. Tailor each application letter to the job. As mentioned above, emphasize in your letter why you
are an ideal candidate for the specific job. This requires that you personalize each letter to fit the
company and position. Match your qualifications to the job posting by highlighting the skills, and
requirements listed in the description.
3. Be professional. It is important to stick to a certain level of formality. Pay particular attention to the
professionalism of your salutation. You wouldn't, for instance, want to refer to the letter's recipient
by their first name unless specifically requested.
4. Carefully proofread. Employers are likely to overlook an application with a lot of errors.
Proofread for grammar and spelling errors. Be particularly mindful to spell the recipient's name
correctly, as well as the company name.
5. Follow business letter format. Use business letter format when writing your letter. If you’re
sending a typed hard-copy letter, be sure to lead with a paragraph containing your address, followed
by the date, followed by the address of the recipient.
