What are acronyms and
why are they important?
• First of all, we are going to start
explaining a little bit about what are
acronyms and why are they important.
An acronym is a pronounceable word
formed from the first letter (or
sometimes just a few fisrt letters) of
each word in a phrase or title.
• They are important because help us to
speed up the reading and ease (make it
easier) the understanding of the content
of a paper.
ASTM
• It is the acronym for “American Society • Mechanical Engineers use this acronym
for Testing and Materials”. It means to explain where did they obtain the
“Sociedad Americana para pruebas y standards to test the materials used in
Materiales” in spanish. their machines
• It is an international standards • The most used material is the steel and
organization that develops and we get the standars to tensile tests,
publishes technical standards for a wide hardness tests, ductility tests, etc. from
range of materials, products, systems, ASTM.
and services.
• It was founded in 1898 as the American
Section of the International Association
for Testing Materials
CAD
• It is the acronym for “Computer Aided • Mechanical Engineers use this acronym
Design”, and it means“Diseño Asistido to refer that they used a CAD software
por Computadora” in spanish. when they used a program like
AUTOCAD, SolidWorks to make their

creation, modification, analysis, or
optimization of a design.
• CAD software is used to increase the
productivity of the designer, because it
helps us to make the design faster than
manually, improving the quality of the
product.
AISI
• The AISI standard is also known for being a
classification of steels and alloys of non-ferrous
materials.
• AISI is the acronym for American Iron and Steel
Institute, in English.
• In this system, steels are classified with four digits.
The first specifies the main alloy, the second
indicates the approximate percentage of the main
element and with the last two digits the amount of
carbon present in the alloy is known
ASME
• ASME is the acronym for American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
• It is an association of professionals, which has generated a design, construction,
inspection and testing code for equipment, among others, boilers and pressure vessels.
• this code is globally accepted.
• ASME has 110,000 members in 150 countries.
• Today, ASME is a global society serving industrial engineers and manufacturers.
AWS
• AWS is the acronym for American Welding Society.
• The American Welding Society (AWS) was founded in 1919 as a non-profit organization
to advance the science, technology and application of welding and allied joining and
cutting processes, including brazing, soldering and thermal spraying.
• The roots of the American Welding Society stretch back to World War I, when the
sudden demands of swiftly producing military equipment brought about the need for
standardization of the manufacturing industry.
SMAW
• SMAW is the acronym for Shielded metal arc welding.
• Is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode covered with a flux to
lay the weld.
• Because of the versatility of the process and the
simplicity of its equipment and operation, shielded metal
arc welding is one of the world's first and most popular
welding processes.
ABS
• The antilok brake system is a device used in cars, airplanes and some advanced models
of de motocicles.
• It varies the braking forces, in cars it prevents the tires from slipping on the ground
during the braking process.
API
• The American Petroleum Institute is the premier trade association in the US,
represeanting nearly 400 corporations involved in production, refining, distribution, and
many other aspects of the oil and natural gas industry.
• The association supports the reduction of CO2 emissions and the greenhouse efect.
OHL
• It means “Over high limit”.
• This abbreviation is used in a machine shop when recording nonconformances.
TDP
• It means “Technical data package”.
• The complete package of information that defines a part, of which the drawing itself is
often only a subset. It also includes engineering orders (drawing change notices), 3D
model datasets, data tables, memoranda, and any special conditions called out by the
purchase order or the companies' terms-and-conditions documents
