 The US won the Spanish-American War and in 1898 PR
became a US territory.
 1917: Jones Act & US citizenship:
 English is decreed as the official language and Puerto Ricans
were granted US citizenship.
 We cannot vote for president, and we have a commissioner (w/
no vote) in Congress.
 Because of the Jones Act, US finished products are priced 15-
20% higher on the island than on the mainland.

 1930-1970: Mass sterilization, 1/3 of PR’s female population
were operated (highest rate in the world)

 1941: occupation of Vieques by the US Navy for target practice
(and Agent Orange used in the Vietnam War)
 In total, the Navy dropped 3 million pounds of bombs in
Vieques which caused diseases (cancer)
 1948-1957: Gag Law- suppress the independence movement
 1976- IRS Section 936: allows U.S. companies to operate in the
island without paying corporate taxes generating unprecedented
profits.
 PR remains a colony, the Jones Act has not been repealed.
 PR has a debt that exceed $70 billion and was just hit by one of
the worst hurricanes in PR’s history: María.
