PIPING CODE

PRESENTED BY :
MUHAMMAD NASIR
July 30, 2009
Definitions:

 piping: assemblies of piping components used for fluid

flows. Piping also includes piping supporting element, but
does not include support structures…or equipment..

 piping components: mechanical element suitable for

joining or assembly into pressure–tight fluid–containing piping
systems…pipe, tubing, fittings, flanges, gasket, bolting, valves
and devices such as expansion joints, traps, strainers etc.

 piping system: interconnected piping subject to the same

design conditions
Definitions:

 Code: set forth minimum requirements for design, material,

fabrication, erection, testing, and inspection.

• Provide a set of requirements for obtaining a safe,

reliable and economical installation.

• For example: ASME B31- Code for Pressure Piping

Piping Development Process

1. Establish applicable system Code

2. Establish design conditions
3. Make piping material decisions
• Material of construction
• Determine wall thickness
• Valves
4. Establish preliminary piping system layout and support
configuration
5. Perform flexibility analysis
6. Finalize layout and bill of material
7. Fabricate and install
8. Examine and test
PRESSURE PIPING CODES

 ASME B 31 (earlier known as ANSI B 31)

B31 Code for pressure piping, developed by ASME
 B31.1 Power Piping
Electric power generating stations, geothermal heating
system, and central and direct heating and cooling
system

 B31.3 Process Piping

Petroleum refineries, chemical, pharmaceutical, textile,
paper, and cryogenic plants; and related processing
plants

 B31.4 Pipeline Transportation Systems for

Liquid Hydrocarbons and Other Liquids

 B31.5 Refrigeration Piping and Heat Transfer

Components
Refrigerants and secondary coolants

 B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution

Piping Systems
Gas between sources and terminals, including
compressor, regulating and metering stations, gas
gathering pipelines
 B31.9 Building Services Piping
Industrial, institutional, commercial, and public
buildings, and in multi-unit residencies, which does not
require the range of sizes, pressures, and temperature
covered in B31.1
PRESSURE PIPING CODES (Cont’d)

 B31.11 Slurry Transportation Piping Systems

Aqueous slurries between plants, and terminals and within
terminals, pumping and regulating stations

 ANSI Z223.1 National fuel gas code (earlier known

as B31.2)
Fuel gas from the point of delivery to the connection of each
fuel utilization device
ASME B31.3 Scope

Rules for the Process Piping Code Section B31.3 have

been developed considering piping typically found in
petroleum refineries; chemical, pharmaceutical, textile,
paper, and cryogenic plants; and related processing
plants and terminals.
ASME B31.3 Scope

This Code prescribes requirements for:

• Materials and components
• Design
• Fabrication
• Assembly
• Erection
• Examination
• Inspection
• Testing
of piping
ASME B31.3 Scope

This Code applies for all fluids, including:

• Raw, intermediate, and finished chemicals
• Petroleum products
• Gas, steam, air, water
• Refrigerants; and
• Cryogenic fluids
