Use of English: Linking
Adverbials
We have already seen that linking adverbials can help clarify a text by specifying the sequence in
which things happen (firstly, then, finally).

They can also provide cohesion by giving us extra information (in addition, additionally, besides) or
reinforcing an opinion (furthermore, moreover), contrasting (however, whereas, on the other hand, in
contrast), showing cause and effect (consequently, accordingly, as a result) and telling us something of
the writer or speaker’s attitude (unfortunately, fortunately, thankfully, hopefully, sadly, happily):

However, over the last one hundred years, the tiger population has decreased.

As a result, domestic livestock are sometimes killed.

Unfortunately, over the past century, enormous areas of this habitat have been developed.
