WHITESPACE

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
What is Whitespace?
 Is the spacing between different elements which contains nothing.

 Many times referred to as negative space

 In web design terms, it’s the space between

graphics, columns, images, text, margins
and other elements.
Whitespace is :
  It is the space left untouched in order to smooth things out
and transform a page into something elegant.
 It is also the blank space that reminds us that simpler
designs are beautiful and that we don’t need to create a
layout filled with text and graphical elements to deliver a
clear and direct message.
 Even though we call it white space, it doesn’t mean the
actual space must be white. The blank space may be filled
with any color as long as it is free of any elements like text
or images.
 Whitespace is also associated
with elegance and sophistication
since it is a way to organize text,
organize elements and guide users
attention to certain elements.
 For comparison purposes,
We call the space that is filled positive.
The negative space actually helps to mould and
define what the positive space is.
If you see the faces, that's
because, in this particular
design, the white space is acting
as the negative space, whereas
the black is the positive.
We can inverse the roles and get
a completely different view
because both of them are
working together to mold the
image.
Two Types of Whitespace
 Undefined Whitespace
 which is what you get when you open a new document
 Active Whitespace
 which occurs when an object is place in undefined white
space.
What is the purpose of whitespace?

White space allows:

Rhythm
Unity
Legibility
Readability
Balance
 Rhythm:
This refers to the flow of elements in a design, whether it is type or shapes.

 Unity:
This principle of design is like the director behind the camera. He who directs and makes sure
everything flows smoothly.

 Legibility/Readability:
This refers to how easily shapes of letters can be distinguished usually refers to larger sizes while
readability refers to how easily type can be read.

 Balance:
Balance refers to the weight of a design based on the objects or elements of the design.
How is Whitespace used?
 Well for starters it can be used in every media of design
whether it be web/graphic design, illustrations,
abstract artwork or photography, it can be used
anywhere.
 Their homepage is filled with whitespace so we can
focus on what is important:
