Definition family

 The family is a group of person composed of


father , mother and children united by marriage
,blood or adoption and communicating with
each other in their respective roles,
characterized by common residence, economic
cooperation and reproduction.
 The smallest group of the society
Function of family

• Article 201 of the family code of the


Philippines has spelled out the function of the
family to include the caring for the rearing of
children , for civic consciousness and
efficiency, moral, mental physical
characteristics and well-being, thus the family
is responsible for the physical. Mental, social,
emotional, moral, and spiritual development
of the child.

Types of family

Family may be classified in the different


ways:
 Composition
Nuclear family- composed of the basic family
members (father, mother, and children)
Extended family- if the composition includes
relatives in addition to the basic family
members.
 Organization
Patriarchal- authority emanates from
the father
Matriarchal- authority emanates from
the mother
Egalitarian- equal division of authority
for both husband and wife
 Size
Small- composed of 3 to 4
children
Large-composed of more than
5 children
 Marriage
Monogamous- if father has only
one wife
Majority of the Filipino family
belong to this type of family ,
because 85% of our population is
catholic.
Polygamous- where the father are
allowed to have more than one wife
depending on his ability to support the
family , our Muslim brother belong to
this type of family.
Polyandry- allows the wife to have
more than one husband.
 Place of residence
Rural families those living in the
remote areas of the country
Urban families those who live in
the cities or town
 
Patrilocal-newlywed couple stay with
the family or near to the family of the
groom
Matrilocal- newlywed couple stay with
the family or near to the family of the
bride
Neolocal- newlywed couple lives away
from both family of orientation
Patrilineal- if relatives of the husband are
living with the family.
Matrilineal – if relatives of the wife are
living with the family.
Bilineal- if relatives both husband and
wife are living with the family
Family of orientation – is the family
where the newlywed came from.
Family of pro- creation – is the family is
established by the newlywed couple
where they begin to raise to their own
family.
Right and Obligation of the family

The man in the family


 
 Provider of all needs of the family by having sufficient
income
 Head of the family, jointly responsible for the guidance
and rearing of the children
 Personal and social companionship of the mother
 Understand and assist the mother with the problem in
raising the family
The woman in the family
 Expected to manage the affairs of the
household efficiently.
 The mother’s role in the family is almost
similar to that of the husband
 Has more demanding task compared to the
father .
 Responsible in acquiring new knowledge
and skill to create a wholesome and happy
home atmosphere
The children the family
 Involvement in all activities undertaken by
the family
 Cooperate and voluntarily give their best
toward the fulfilment of the family goals.
 Should learn to assume responsibilities
according to their age , sex, and abilities
 Should be ready to take care of their parent
when they are too old to support themselves
Article of the family code of the Philippines
enumerated the ff. rights and duties of the
parents:

1.To keep them in their company, to support,


educate, and instruct by the right precept and
good example and to provide for the
upbringing in keeping with their means.
2.To give them, love and affection, advice and
counsel, companionship and understanding.
3. To provide them with moral and spiritual
guidance. Inculcate them honesty,
integrity, self- reliance , industry and thrift
stimulate their interest in civic affairs and
inspire in them compliance with duties of
citizenship.
4. Top enhance, protect , and preserved
and maintain their physical and mental at
all times .
5. To furnish them with good and
wholesome educational materials,
supervise their activities, recreation and
association with others, protect them from
bad company and prevent them from
acquiring habits detrimental to their
health studies and morals.
6. To represent them in all matters affecter
interest.
7. To demand from them respect and
obedience .
8. To impose discipline on them as may
required under the circumstances.
9. To perform such as other duties as
imposed by law upon parents and
guardian.
Marriage in the Family

Definition of term:
• Marriage – the socially approved union
of man and woman with the expectation
that they will play the role of husband
and wife, for the primary purposed of
getting and rearing of children.
• Pamanhikan-formal asking for the girl
hand marriage .
• Written consent –permission given if the
contracting parties in between 18 and 21
years of age .

Written advice- information ask of


the contracting parties if they are
between 21 to 25 years of age
Annulment –legal separation that
the marriage is invalid
Divorce- a complete dissolution of
marriage ; to dissolve marriage
between two spouses .
Legal separation – dissolving of
marriage between two spouses but
none can either contract another
marriage,.
Secret marriage –a marriage that keep
secret for extended period of time and
either the ceremony nor the new
relationship is made known. The secret
must be kept from every one except
license issuer, the officiant , and the
legally required witnesses.
Secret wedding- is an elopement and the
fact of marriage is made known. After
Incestuous marriage –a marriage
between relatives , which is not allowed
in the Philippines.
Arrange marriage- a traditional marriage
as arrange by the parents .The parents of
the boy, with the help of relatives , inquire
into potentials of the possible marriage
with a girl.The main reason is to serve the
interest of the family in terms of
Mixed marriage-refers to marriage in which
the husband and wife has considerable or
unusual gap in any of the following : age,
religion, size, nationality, family background,
intelligence and education.
The Following circumstances shall constitute fraud
and deceit that may annul a marriage.

1.Non-disclosure of a previous conviction by


final judgment of the party of a crime
involving moral turpitude
2.Concealment of the wife that at the time of
marriage, she was pregnant by man other
than her husband.
3. Concealment of drug addiction , habitual
alcoholism, or homosexuality or lesbianism
existing at the time of marriage.
4. Concealment of sexually transmissible
disease, regardless of the nature, existing
at the time of marriage.
Legal Separation is recognized based on the
following:
1.Repeated physical violence or glossy
abusive conduct direct against the
petitioner, a common child of the
petitioner ( the term child shall include a
child by nature or by adoption)
2.Physical violence or more pressure to
compel the petitioner to change religious
3. Attempt of respondent to corrupt or
induce petitioner, a common child or a
child of the petitioner, to engage in
prostitution, or connivance in such
corruption or inducement ;
4. Final judgement sentencing the
respondent to imprisonment of more than
six years ,even if pardoned ;
4. Drug addiction or habitual alcoholism of
the respondent;
5. Lesbianism or homosexuality of the
respondent;
6. Contracting by the respondent of a
subsequent bigamous marriage , whether
in the Philippines or abroad.
7.Sexuality infidelity or perversion;

8.Attempt by the respondent against the


life of petitioner;

9.Abandonment of petitioner by
respondent without justifiable cause for
more than one year;
Reason why teenage marriage failed
1.Person under twenty are still undergoing
some biological and psychological shifts.
2.In the teenage years, the boy or girls is
still trying to discover who he or she is.
3.Marriage is an adult type of relationship
and so emotional maturity is prime
requisite.
