2. QUALITY

Education system has experienced little change over the last

couple of years.

That is why CLIL is a clear step forward to improve quality

in language teaching, as it exists a pressure to invest
1. CONVERGE
in education driving to a higher standard quality.
It refers to the integration of two concepts never seen before working as one.

A foreign language is used to teach non-linguistic content matter in order to promote both content and language mastery.

This combination is the main point of Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach.

4. OVERLAPPING TERMS

We tend to categorise everything, but “labels are

for jars and not for people” as Marsh stated.

This umbrella term was conceived by gathering:

- Good existing practices

- Scaffolding
3. MAINSTREAM ACCESS

One of its main advantages is the fact that all children can
have access to knowledge and develop their skills
regardless their family and/or personal circumstances.
If the language immersion experience is not provided
CLIL claims to be very effective for a vast majority of students with both of them, CLIL will fail.
since they go through a wide range of activities which allows them to explore and obtain successful results.

6. NEW TECHNOLOGIES

ICT has had a huge impact on people, so education

should be in accordance with the new generations are
surrounded by as “digital natives”.

5. COMPETENCES CLIL is considered a suitable approach since it fits the

Dynamic education systems are the ones
where the knowledge is linked to the abilities
interests and needs of young people, and it focuses on
to use that knowledge.

CLIL is a very specific competence-based education which promotes learning by doing:

learning in order to put it into practice now and not
- It builds competence from an early stage.
- It appeals to gifted learners as much as it helps SEN students.
later.

8. COMMUNICATION

There is an emerging need to be able to communicate

effectively in the current society.

CLIL uses the communication skills as a fundamental

part of the language acquisition.

7. SOCIAL NETWORKING

CLIL is a social networking activity.

Working in groups fosters communication,

so it allows a high degree of interactions between students since cooperative learning has proved to be a useful method for
teachers to implement in the classroom.

10. COGNITION

Neuroscience brings up new evidences of what is

happening in people’s brains when learning languages.

CLIL is a very active way of learning and provides a safe

and rich learning environment to stimulate students based
on social constructivism, which means that we are in
front of a psychological approach that helps nurture their

brains.
Increasing diversity in the classroom represents
both a challenge and an opportunity to learn
in different ways.

CLIL is suitable for all types of students regardless

their backgrounds and/or personal circumstances, because multiple linguistic backgrounds are involved.

CONCLUSION

The dual focus of having simultaneous content and language learning outcomes makes a
huge difference from conventional practice in both subjects and language teaching.

CLIL is a whole immersive experience which makes an exciting journey of learning by

using all their abilities and thinking skills.

Teachers not only require a good competence in the foreign language but also in
methodologies since their lessons plans must fit different learning styles. Besides, they need
to use scaffolding techniques and work systematically on both the subject language and the
interaction language using authentic materials in actual situations with meaningful tasks.

After all has been said, it cannot be denied that CLIL entails personal and professional
enrichment either for students and teachers.
