Chemistry is the study of matter

Melting point is a certain temperature

that solids begin to transform into
liquids.

Boiling point is the temperature at

which a liquid boils.
MELTING POINT BOILING POINT

WATER 0 0C 100 0C

TUNGSTEN 3422 0C 5555 0C

MERCURY -39 0C 357 0C

HELIUM -272 0C -269 0C

Note 1: At state changes, temperature
remains constant as long as all the
substance is transformed from one state
to another.

Note 2 : Pure substances have definite
melting and boiling points but mixtures don’t
have certain melting and boiling points.

Note 3 : Evaporation is possible at any
temperature but boiling is possible at
definite temperatures.
Example 1

Find the physical states of the substances A, B

and C at room temperature.

Substance Melting Point (oC) Boiling Point (oC)

A -35 10

B 45 350

C 15 75
Example 2
Considering the melting and boiling points of
substances X, Y and Z. What are the physical
states of them at 10 oC ?

Substance Melting Point (oC) Boiling Point (oC)

X -50 50

Y 0 30

Z 30 120
