Overview of Unit Plan
Day #1: Gymnastics Day #4: Dance

Day #2: Yoga & Mindful Meditation Day #5: Personal Activities Planning

Day #3: Fitness Activities

Goals:
- Help students develop an awareness of their bodies and understanding of importance of
being physically active
- Develop students’ mastery in a wide variety of individual physical activities
- Provide students with the tools to be active for life

*Note*
- All lessons and activities can be implemented in a virtual or face to face setting
- The activities can be completed as a group or individually

Living Education
Lesson #1: Gymnastics
Students will:
1. Learn how to move their bodies to maintain balance and develop coordination
2. Learn stretches and movements that will help improve their flexibility
3. Students will learn how to stay safe while engaging in various rolls and gymnastic routines

Activity
Gymnastics circuit where students will
travel from station to station engaging
in various activities.

Activities may include: rolls, handstand


progressions, jumping and landing,
balancing challenges
Lesson #2: Yoga & Mindful Meditation
Students will:
1. Learn to make mind to body connections in order to develop concentration
2. Learn breathing techniques to enhance focus, and relax their bodies.
3. Learn various yoga poses aimed to increase one’s flexibility, balance, and strength.

Activity
Yoga class where students follow the
lead of a yoga instructor (can be lead
by hpe teacher or a video) to build a
mind to body connection, increase
their flexibility, balance, and strength,
and to stay relaxed and focused.
Lesson #3: Fitness Activities
Students will:
1. Develop an increased understanding of the techniques needed in order to adequately work out
major muscle groups when performing common exercises such as squats, pushups, and situps.
2. Learn various exercises, and how to move their bodies in an effective way in order to improve their
physical literacy and apply fitness concepts to their individual lives.
3. Develop an increased understanding of the benefits of exercise and the impact fitness has on one’s
overall well-being.
4. Learn the importance of stretching, as well as the importance of participating in a warm-up before
exercising and a cool-down after exercising.

Lesson #4: Dance

Students will:
1. expand their movement vocabulary by learning to move and groove in a unique way
2. explore dances from different cultures around the world and will be able to relate and reflect on
their own experiences
3. learn unconventional ways to stay active and healthy for life

Activity
Dance/Zumba class where students can follow the lead of the instructor or from video
recordings such as Just Dance, dance dance revolution, or zumba classes.

Students can also individually or in groups pick a song and come up with a short dance
which can later be shown and taught to the whole class.
Lesson #5: Personal Fitness Activities Planning
Students will:

1. Reflect on fitness activities that they have done throughout the unit and apply them into their own
lives.
2. Learn and explore what activities best fit their lifestyles and interests.
3. Learn how to create/have a balanced lifestyle and healthy habits/routines.
4. Learn about self-motivation and accountability as they follow through with their activity plan.

Activity
Design/create a personal activities plan that you will follow
throughout the school year. Students can incorporate activities
learned in this unit, or additional activities that they enjoy.

Activity #1: Connect-4-Fitness!


Activity #2: Fitness Word Challenge!
Connect-4-Fitness
Goal: students will improve physical literacy, muscular strength & endurance as
well as agility, balance and coordination

- Students will be split up into breakout rooms where they will face off with their peers in a
head-to-head match of connect-4-fitness
- One student in each breakout room will be the coordinator
- The coordinator is responsible for:
- Opening up the links provided and sending partner unique code to join:

- Sharing their screen on zoom
- Deciding which die belongs to who
- Rolling the dice for the group
Rules
1. Two students will face off head-to-head each round
2. After the coordinator rolls the dice, their allocated die will determine what movement they will
complete (from a list of exercises provided)
3. After both individuals have completed their exercise for 30 seconds, they will place a piece onto the
connect-four board
