The White Tower

The Tower of London was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1600
rebuilt by William the Conqueror . It´s situated near the river
Thames and the Tower of Bridge. The Tower of London consists of
the White Tower (the oldest part), Waterloo barracks(Crown
Jewels), Site of Scaffold, Tower green ( there was a collection of
wild animals), Bloody tower (prison) and Traitor´s Gate.
Traitors
gate

Traitor’s Gate was originally known as Water

Gate, but was later changed when it was used as the
landing for the Crown's enemies. All important
prisoners entered the Tower through this gate.
The Tower was used …
as fortress and a prison.
It has housed the Royal Mint, the
Public Records, and the Royal
Observatory
For centuries it was the arsenal for
arms and armour.
Now it is a museum and also the place
where the Crown Jewels are kept.
The Crown Jewels
The Tower as a prison
The Tower of London was used to imprison only
the aristocracy.
Ordinary folks were generally sent to Newgate
Prison and executed at Tyburn 3 miles away
(where the present day Marble Arch stands.
Many of the aristocracy were beheaded on Tower
Hill, before a large crowd
There many famous prisoners were kept for
example queen Ann Boleyn, philosopher Thomas
More and Hitler´s deputy – Rudolf Hess. He was
the last state prisoner to be hold in the Tower, in
May 1941.

The Ravens of the Tower
The ravens are kept in the

Kingdom. The legend says
that the Kingdom will cease to
exist when the ravens leave
the Tower. The oldest raven
was Jim Crow and died when
he had 44 years old.

There are 6 ravens in the Tower

now. Their names are Hugine,
Munin, Thor, Branwen, Gwyllum
and Baldrick.
The Ceremony of the Keys
Every night for the last 700 years the Tower has been
locked up in the Ceremony of the Keys. At 9:53 p. m. the
Chief Warder of the Tower goes with his Escort to lock the
gates. When they return to the Bloody Tower, they are
stopped and asked:
"Who goes there?“
"The Keys.“
"Whose Keys?"
"Queen Elizabeth's Keys.“
"Pass Queen Elizabeth's Keys. All's well."
And so the Tower of London is safety closed for the night.
