My Personal Best Leadership

Experience
BY: ABIGAIL THOMAS
My Experience
I was the Head Fels Student Center Manager last year for the Fels Student Center Manager Team.

The team was assigned the responsibility of putting together and hosting the Fels of Screams event for Fall
of 2019.

The team got together for biweekly meetings to discuss our ideas and execution of the event during the
semester prior to the event.

I believe that this event is my standard of excellence for leadership.

What happened?
The Fels of Screams is an event where the Fels Manager Team designs and puts together a haunted house in
Fels. Fels is transformed with decorations, audio, and characters with props and costumes.

The Nichols community can attend this event when it takes place around Halloween.

The past Fels of Screams events were not successful, so the team felt a pressure of judgement and criticism.

The team made a goal to make this year a success.

What was the outcome?
The Fels of Screams 2019 event was successful, and the team received many compliments for the event.

The team felt proud, connected, and happy after the event.

It was an amazing experience to see the team come together and celebrate their success.
What was my role?
I was the Head Manager, so I ran every meeting, initiated communication between the team, and ran the
event as the main person of contact for any problems or questions.

I was very busy for the few weeks leading up to this event. A lot of my free time was spent brainstorming
and shopping for supplies.

I kept track of our budget and inventory.

I made sure every team member knew their place for this event.

I managed all volunteers and recruited them.

How did it make me feel?
This made me feel like a true leader that I had always aspired to be.

I felt proud, accomplished, and grateful for my team.

I learned that just because there is a reputation about something, it doesn’t dictate the future outcome.

I learned that when people are brought together with good leadership and a purpose, they can connect with
each other and form real relationships.
