Definition of Terms
Let’s avoid confusion shall we?

3
Primary Healthcare
▧ Primary healthcare is a term used to describe the
first contact a person has with the health system
when they have a health problem or issue that is not
an emergency. It is the part of the health system that
people use most and may be provided, for example,
by a general practitioner (GP), physiotherapist or
pharmacist.

4
Primary Healthcare Providers
▧ Primary healthcare is a term used to describe a range of healthcare
providers who work in the community. Any healthcare professional
who is the first point of contact for the health system can be a
primary healthcare provider.
Most people visit their GP (sometimes referred to as the 'local
doctor') as a first step when they have a health problem that is not an
emergency. The primary healthcare system also includes allied health
professionals, such as dentists and physiotherapists.

The Principles of Primary Health Care

Defining Health and Health Related
Problems
▧ In this responsibility, the community shares the
responsibility with the goal of defining health and
health related needs and problems.
▧ In my opinion, a process of raising awareness,
assessing and education.
▧ E.g. – Community health surveys

9
Identifying Realistic Solutions
▧ In this responsibility, the community shares the
responsibility with the goal of identifying REAL
solutions.
▧ After proper assessment of problems, an
intervention has to be done.
▧ Must be SMART
▧ E.g Clean up drives, Health Education

10
Organizing the Community for Health
Actions
▧ After a thorough assessment of the problem, the
community must be “ready” in order to facilitate the
intervention, this can be met through proper
organization.
▧ This also prevents confusion to both the health care
provider, facilities and the community.
▧ E.g Project planning, project briefing, orientation.

11
Providing Essential Health Services
▧ More so, a role of the Primary Health Care provider.
▧ Must always be accessible, available and reachable.
▧ E.g. – diagnosis, treatment and care of people with health
problems
▧ promoting good health
▧ preventing health problems
▧ early intervention
▧ managing ongoing and long-term conditions.

12
Evaluating Results of Health Actions
▧ In any concrete plans and systematics, it is important to
conduct an evaluation which has a goal to always improve.
▧ Evaluation is a process that critically examines a plan/system. It
involves collecting and analyzing information about a program's
activities, characteristics, and outcomes. Its purpose is to make
judgments about a plan, to improve its effectiveness.

Personal Reflection

14
Personal Reflection
▧  Interconnectedness refers to the ability to
understand and function in an increasingly
multicultural, international, yet interconnected
environment. It fosters the development of
individuals to achieve goals, improve the
healthcare, and be such informed citizens in a
diverse national and global society.

15
Personal Reflection
▧ Forgetting that we are all connected, and instead
regarding ourselves as separate and independent,
can lead to purely self-focused thoughts and
actions.  It is good to care for ourselves, but we also
need to consider others at the same time.  When we
remember our common humanity and
interconnectedness we think more “we” and “us”,
and less “I” and “me”.
