Knowledge Objective
 Explain basic functions of storage management
 Explain the function of the main components of the stoarge management
software
 List when and where to install each component of DSM
 Explain the function of firmware and NVSRAM files
 Differentiate direct managed (out-of-band) and host managed (in-band)
methods of managing your disk subsystem
 Describe the functionality of the two windows in DSM

Storage System Management with DSM

 A Java-based graphical user interface
 Enables administrators to manage storage systems over LANs, WANs
or SANs
 Managing a storage system includes:
• Configuration – configure storage system capacity into logical volumes
• Maintenance – configure e-mail destinations to receive alert messages
• Performance Monitoring – tune the storage system for optimal application
performance

 Supports fully dynamic reconfiguration of volumes without interruption to

active volumes
 Supports data migration between RAID levels with uninterrupted access
to data
 Redundant Path Management
 High Avaliability Features – on-line firmware upgrade, on-line re-
configuration, etc

DSM Components
 4 main software components:
– Client
• SMclient, Event Monitor, Smcli
– Host Agent (SMagent)
– Path Failover Driver (RDAC)
– SM Utilities
• hot_add, SMdevices, SMrepassist

 Additional files that are bundeled with DSM

– Firmware
– NVSRAM
– SMruntime

Client
 A Java-based graphical user interface
 Used to monitor and manage storage systems
 SMclient is installed on a management station or a host
enabling the system administrator to manage storage
systems
 SMruntime may also have to be installed
