CMOS Inverter Design and Characteristics

1. The document discusses CMOS inverters and compares them to NMOS inverters. 2. CMOS inverters use both PMOS and NMOS transistors which allows one transistor to be always off, reducing static power consumption. 3. The key advantages of CMOS inverters are high noise immunity and low static power consumption compared to NMOS inverters which dissipate power in their resistive load.

NMOS Inverter( Resistive Load )

A resistor is used as a
pull up.
Problem:
Power Dissipation in
resistor.

Vi V0

1 0(Gnd)

0 1(VDD)
To resolve this issue, a NMOS can be used instead
of a resistor.

Q2 will be operating in
saturation mode.

The power dissipation

will be minimum.
CMOS Logic
Why CMOS ?
Two important characteristics of
CMOS devices are
1. high noise immunity and
2. low static power consumption.

Since one transistor of the pair is always off,

the series combination draws significant
power only momentarily during switching
between on and off states.
Important Notes:

1. PMOS delivers Strong1 , but gives weak 0.

2. NMOS delivers Strong0 , but gives weak 1.
