Calcium?
What is Calcium?

Calcium is a mineral that is

necessary for life. In addition
to building bones and keeping
them healthy, calcium enables
our blood to clot, our muscles
to contract, and our heart to
beat. About 99% of the calcium
in our bodies is in our bones
and teeth.
What is the role of calcium in the body?

The body needs calcium to maintain

strong bones and to carry out many important functions. Almost all
calcium is stored in bones and teeth,
where it supports their structure
and hardness. The body also needs
calcium for muscles to move and for
nerves to carry messages between
the brain and every body part.
Calcium helps your body with:

Calcium helps your body with:

- Building strong bones and teeth

- Clotting blood
- Sending and receiving nerve signals
- Squeezing and relaxing muscles
- Releasing hormones and other chemicals
- Keeping a normal heartbeat
How much calcium do we need?

• Adults aged 19 to 64 need 700 mg of

calcium a day.
• When blood calcium levels are low
the amount of calcium in our blood
goes below normal, out parathyroid
glands release hormone called
parathyroid hormone (PTH).
