Lesson 21: Web & Game Design

• Web design encompasses many different skills

and disciplines in the production and
maintenance of websites.
• The different areas of web design include
graphic design; interface; authoring,
standardized code and proprietary
software; user experience design; and search
engine optimization.
• Often many individuals will work in teams
covering different aspects of the design
process, although some designers will cover
them all.
• The term web design is normally used to
describe the design process relating to the
front-end (client side) design of a website.
• Web design partially overlaps web
engineering in the broader scope of web
development.
• Web designers are expected to have an
awareness of usability.
Essential issues?
Game Design
• The art of applying design and aesthetics to
create a game for entertainment or for
educational, exercise, or experimental
purposes
• Increasingly, elements and principles of game
design are also applied to other interactions,
particularly virtual ones.
• Game design creates goals, rules and
challenges to define a:
• Board game, card game, dice game, casino
game, role-playing game, sport, video
game, war game or simulation that produces
desirable interactions among its participants
and, possibly, spectators.
• Academically, game design is part of game
studies, while game theory studies strategic
decision making (primarily in non-game
situations).
• Games have historically inspired seminal
research in the fields of probability, artificial
intelligence, economics, and optimization
theory.
Video Game Design
• The process of designing the content and rules
of a video game in the pre-production
stage and designing the gameplay,
environment, storyline, and characters in
the production stage.
• The designer of a game is very much like the
director of a film; the designer is the visionary
of the game and controls the artistic and
technical elements of the game in fulfillment
of their vision.
•  Video game design requires artistic and
technical competence as well as writing skills
• As games became more complex
and computers and consoles became more
powerful, the job of the game designer
became separate from the lead programmer.
