Narrative tenses
Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect, Past Perfect Continuous
We use narrative tenses
• to talk about the past
• to tell a story
• to describe past events
The four narrative tenses are
• PAST SIMPLE
• PAST CONTINUOUS
• PAST PERFECT
• PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
At three o’clock yesterday afternoon I was walking back home
with my brother. We both felt really tired because we had been
training really hard for hours at the gym. When we got to the
house we noticed that someone had left the front door open. We
looked at each other, went inside quietly and began to search
the rooms. A strange man was looking around our front room.
When he saw us, he fled. Fortunately, he hadn’t stolen
anything.
Past Simple
• actions that started and finished in the past (completed actions),
often with a time reference
Yesterday morning, the car broke down on a motorway.
People didn’t have easy lives two hundred years ago.
• to tell people about a sequence of past events (in the order that the
actions took place)
We looked at each other, went inside quietly and began to search the
rooms.
Past Continuous
• ongoing actions or situations around a time in the past
At three o’clock yesterday afternoon I was walking back home with my brother.
I was running really fast.
Thousands of people were living in very enclosed spaces.
• to set the scene in a story
A strong wind was blowing from the east.
The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
Past Simple and Past Continuous
• one action interrupts another action in the past
The bell rang while I was having dinner.

Past Simple and Past Perfect
• an action that happened before another action in the past
When we got to the house we noticed that someone had left the front door open.

Past Perfect Continuous
• to describe longer actions or situations that take place over a period
of time, started in the past and continued up until another time in the
past or had an effect on a later action in the past
We both felt really tired because we had been training really hard for hours at the gym.
She had been studying for hours when she found out the exam was cancelled.
