U03: Assessing Students for

Instruction using Web Tools

By: Sonya Crone

Assessment Tools
• Assessment Tools- are the instrument that is used to collect data for each outcome.
The tools are the actual product that is handed out or on the computer for the purpose
of assessing whether the students have achieved a particular learning outcome
(Assessment Tools and Methods).
• By using assessment tools a teacher can determine what needs to be taught next to
their students.
• Now days the web has made assessments tools that can be customized for each
individual learner. Likewise each assessment tool can be used for specific areas of
learning or objectives.
Assessment Tools Used for Determining
Instruction
There are many different types of web assessment tools that can be used in teaching
including:
• Writing Tools- Google Docs, Word, Storybird, flipsnack
• Presentation Tools- Google Slides, Microsoft Presentation, Prezi, Pear Deck,
Nearpod,
• Test/Quiz Tools- Kahoot, Google Forms, Formative, Quizlet Live
• Drawing Tools- Google Draw, Whiteboard, AutoDraw
• Audio/Video Tools- iMovie, PowToon, Notetalker, Voice Recorder
So what? Why do we assess students for instruction?
Assessing students is a crucial aspect to teaching. A teacher with assess there students
for many reasons. The main reasons to assess students is:
1. Measure student progress and growth to make sure students are learning and not
getting behind.
2. Make sure no students are falling through the gap, and to check for students who
have potential learning disabilities.
3. Plan and create new lessons and objectives for the students to learn based on
assessment results.
How does careful assessment planning help meet the
needs of a student with disabilities?
• When a teacher modifies their assessments for every student the outcome of success will be much greater.
Careful assessment planning helps students with disabilities because a teacher can pick the assessment type
based on a students strengths and needs.
• Depending the type of disability or if a student has a IEP can help determine the right assessment. Also
creating a learning profile or student treatment plan can also help choose the right assessment.
• A teacher will not want a student to fail a math test because they cannot read the questions, so for example a
teacher could have the student take the test online where the question are read aloud to the student. Similarly,
by planning assessment strategies and modifications for students disability will promote a fair chance of
passing instead of the disability getting in the way of the results.
• Having options like audio, visual aids, extra time for students with disabilities will help a lot when test taking.
• Here are some websites that have tons of resources to use with assessments for teachers that have students

Discuss various factors to consider in assessing students for

instruction and respond to one other post to earn full credit.

Assessing students for instruction is crucial for classroom success. In

my previous semester one of my classes we got to help teach reading
and fluency strategies to third graders once a week. In order to
promote growth we needed to know where the third graders were at
in reading before we could even start teaching our lessons. Without
knowing where they are at in there reading as teachers we could have
had them at a too low of a reading level or too high of a reading level.
This is where assessments come into play. Some factors to consider
when assessing students are the type of assessment (formative or
summative), the length the assessment will be (exit ticket or regular
quiz), what are the students being tested on, does what I am testing
the students on relate to the objective or goal being taught,
