Theorem of three moments
Consider a beam as shown below-

ML, MC, and MR are internal moments developed at

supports L, C and R.
 Its Bending Moment Diagram will be-

 AL & AR are the areas of Left and Right Beam.

 C & C are the reactions at C at LHS and RHS
L R
of C respectively.
Case-I : Without Sinking of Support
 Derivation is based on Conjugate Beam.
 Using the theorem of Superposition and the

fact that the slope of real beam is continuous

over supports.

Superposition of
two Moments

Conjugate Beam for Internal Moment of Real Beam.

  Slope at LHS of C = - Slope at RHS of C

 ( X L+

-
Case-II : With Sinking of Support


 If hL & hR are both upwards then hL & hR are +ve.

Example:
 Find moments at B and C in the following
beam.
 BMD will be as follows:
 Upon solving, we get
RA = 62.22 kN
RB = 97.78 kN
  Applying

⇒ .............(i)
  For joints B,C and D

⇒ …………….(ii)

Solving (i) and (ii),

MB = -74.49 kNm
MC = -122.34 kNm
