Lecture 2
Learning Objectives
• enumerate different community health problems;
• identify most pressing environmental problems in the
community;
• analyze the impact of environmental problems on
people's health; and
• recognize the value of living in a healthy community and
environment
Essential Question
• Why be concerned with our country's environmental
problems?
• Why address community health problems?
• Why live in a healthy community and environment?
Deforestation
• This is the permanent
removal of large areas of
forest, usually to transform
the natural ecosystem in
the area to serve another
purpose.
Flash Flood
• This happens when the
rain falls so fast that the
underlying ground cannot
cope or drain it away fast
enough.
Soil Erosion
• This is the removal of soil,
sediment, and rock
fragments from the
landscape. Wind and
water are also responsible
for erosion. It starts
loosening or removing the
topsoil; washing it down
the slope and ending out
to sea, stream or river.
Oil spill
• This is the release of liquid
petroleum to the
environment, most often
the ocean. It maybe crude
oil from tankers, drilling of
rigs and wells or spills of
petroleum products like
gasoline, diesel on any oily
refuse or waste oil.
Coral Reef Degradation
• Humans destroy coral
reefs by physically killing
them. Several fishermen
use explosives to blow up
a coral reef, completely
destroying them.
Illegal Mining
• The negative impacts of
mining include skin itching
and rashes as result of
washing with
contaminated water or
working in polluted rice
fields.
Climate Change
• This is one of the greatest
challenges for humanity in
the twenty - first century.
Its impact is not only on
the physical and economic
environment but also on
the social, cultural and
political aspects of a
country.
