1 – Antifriction Bearings

A bearing is a machine element which support another

moving machine element. It permits a relative motion between
the contact surfaces of the members, while carrying the load.

Types : 1) Sliding contact 2) Rolling Contact

Sliding contact or Journal Bearing

Working principle of Journal bearing

Types of Journal bearing

Advantages of Rolling contact bearing over sliding contact bearing

1) Small contact area, lower frictional drag

2) Less friction , less power consumption
3) No restriction on speed, can work at various speeds
4) Less lubrication
5) More reliable
6) Less expensive
7) Generate less heat
8) Easy mounting

Disadvantages of Rolling contact bearing over sliding contact

9) Noisy
10) Initial cost is more
11) Shock capacity is less
12) Finite life due to fatigue
13) Dirt and metal chip may lead to failure
14) Diametral space is more
Applications of Rolling contact bearings, sliding contact bearings

1. Deep groove ball bearing : Electrical motor, pump, fans

2. Taper roller bearing : Axle of automobile, machine tools

3. Trust roller bearing : Clutch of automobile, mills

4. Needle roller bearing : Differential of automobile, crank

5. Journal bearing : Heavy turbines, Generators, power

plants
