We use the superlative forms to make a
comparison between two or more things
in which it is defined the relationship of
higher level.
In this case, we only have a subject in the
sentence.
We also have to pay attention to the
number of syllables or endings in order to

The particles THE –EST or THE MOST

RULE 1: ADJECTIVES WITH
ONE SYLLABLE
Ifthe adjective has one syllable, we use
THE –EST:

fast – the fastest old – the oldest

Ferrari cars are the fastest in the market.

Cathy is the oldest student in class.

ONE SYLLABLE
Ifthe adjective ends in letter –e, just add
THE –ST:

late – the latest safe – the safest

«Cuenta conmigo» is the latest Jorge

Bucay’s book.
Edward is the safest driver in the block.

ONE SYLLABLE
If the adjective has the pattern Consonant +
Vowel + Consonant (C+V+C), double the
last consonant and add THE –EST:

hot – the hottest thin – the thinnest

Sahara desert is the hottest in the world.

David is the thinnest boy in the street.
 RULE 2: ADJECTIVES WITH
TWO SYLLABLES
Ifthe adjective has two syllables and ends in
Consonant + -y, change the –y for –i and add
THE –EST:

funny – the funniest ugly – the ugliest

Jim Carrey is the funniest actor in Hollywood.

Worms are the ugliest animals in the animal
kingdom.
RULE 3: ADJECTIVES WITH
TWO OR MORE SYLLABLES
Ifthe adjective has two or more syllables, we
use THE MOST:

generous – the most generous

honest – the most honest

Sandra is the most generous person I know.

Ted and Paula are the most honest people in the
office.
 IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES
We do not apply the previous rules to the
following adjectives; you have to
memorize them:
☺Good / well – the best
☺Bad – the worst
☺Far – the farthest, the furthest
Jimmy Hendrix is the best guitar player.
Farout is the furthest planet from the sun.
