Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects

the skills involved in accurate and fluent word
reading and spelling.

Dyslexia is related to early problems in oral language

development, with persisting problems in the
development of speech-sound (phonological) skills
being a particularly important obstacle to learning to
decode print.

WHAT IS OCR?
Optical character recognition or optical character
reader (OCR) is the electronic or mechanical conversion
of images of typed, handwritten, or printed text into
machine-encoded text, whether from a scanned
document, a photo of a document, a scene-photo or from
subtitle text superimposed on an image. OCR is a field of
research in pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and
computer vision.
OCR Technology became popular in the early 1990s
while attempting to digitize historic newspapers. Since
then the technology has undergone several
improvements. Nowadays solutions deliver near to
perfect OCR accuracy. Advanced methods like
Zonal OCR are used to automate complex
document-based workflows.
OCR is often used as a “hidden” technology,
powering many well-known systems and services
in our daily life. Less known, but as important, use
cases for OCR technology include data entry
automation, indexing documents for search
engines, automatic number plate recognition, as
well as assisting blind and visually impaired
persons.
The three basic principles are already well known
by scientists – integrity, purposefulness, and
adaptability (IPA). These principles constitute the
core of OCR allowing it to replicate natural or
human-like recognition.
TYPES OF OCR

BENEFITS OF OCR FOR
DYSLEXIC
OCR makes it possible to make changes to the digital text.

What can be done with the digital text depends on which reading software you’re using. Common

HOW DIGITAL TEXT
HELPS FOR DYSLEXIC
READERS
Digital text is especially helpful for struggling
readers, including those who have learning
differences such as dyslexia. The digital format
makes it possible for readers to see words on a
screen and hear them read aloud at the same time.
This provides more ways to engage with the
information. It can also help kids develop
independent reading skills.

OCR “looks” at the photo (this is why its name

begins with “optical”) and recognizes the shapes of
the different letters, numbers, and other characters. It
uses character recognition to convert the photo of the
document into a text file. In many cases, the digital
version will maintain the “look and feel” of the
original.

CONCLUSION

OCR technology has proven immensely useful in

digitizing historic newspapers and texts that have
now been converted into fully searchable formats
and had made accessing those earlier texts easier
and faster and is proven to be a helpful tool for
readers with
Dyslexia.
