1.LIST THE FUNCTIONS OF THE TEETH.
2.DEFINE MASTICATION.
3. IDENTIFY THE TYPES OF
TEETH,NUMBER, SHAPE AND
FUNCTION
FUNCTIONS OF TEETH
The human teeth have three
(3) very important functions:
1. Gives shape to the face.
2. Helps with making sounds
and speech
3. Helps with chewing and
crushing food.
SETS OF TEETH

In the lifetime of a human being, there are two
sets of teeth:
1. Temporary (Milk) Teeth
2. Permanent (adult) Teeth
 There are 20 temporary teeth and 32
permanent teeth. There difference in
number is because there are no molars in the
temporary set of teeth.

TYPES OF TEETH
There are four (4) types of
teeth:
1. Incisors (8)
2. Canines (4)
3. Premolars (8)

THE STRUCTURE OF
THE TOOTH

1. IDENTIFY THE PARTS OF THE TOOTH
2. EXPLAIN THE FUNCTIONS OF EACH PART
3. DISCUSS PROPER DENTAL CARE OF TEETH AND
GUMS
PARTS OF THE TOOTH
REVIEW
The tooth is divided into two
parts: the crown and the root.

Crown

Root
The crown is the part of the
tooth that we can see. It sits
above the gum.

The root is the part of the

tooth that we cannot see. It
is hidden within the gum.
THE STRUCTURE OF
THE TOOTH
STRUCTURES OF THE TOOTH
AND THEIR FUNCTION
1. Enamel-
 Hardest material in the
body.
 It protects the teeth
from tooth decay
2. Dentine-
The dentine is the layer next
to the enamel.
makes up most of the tooth.
3. Pulp or Pulp Cavity-
Found in the center of the
tooth
 contains blood vessels and
nerves.
4. Cementum –
 covering on the root that
helps to hold the tooth in
the gum.
TOOTH DECAY

 Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth

that eats away the enamel of the tooth.
 This causes a hole or cavity to form.
TO AVOID TOOTH DECAY WE
CAN:
1. Brush and floss teeth
regularly
2. Limit sweet and sugary
foods
3. Use fluoride
toothpaste
4. Dental visit every 6
months
5. Diet high in vegetables
and minerals (Calcium)
and vitamins (Vitamin
D)
