Patient preparation

Remove the swab from the package

Position yourself in front of patient and tilt the patient’s head

slightly, open the patient’s mouth wide to expose the tonsils and
back of the throat

Press the tongue down with a tongue depressor to hold the tongue
away from the the back of the throat.
Oropharyngeal Swab Procedure

Locate the area of redness and white spots

on the tonsils

Roll the swab on the tonsils and the

posterior wall of the oropharynx

Remove the cap of the accompanying tube

and place the swab in the tube.

Transport the swab to the laboratory
