Le Chatelier’s Principle
Change in Concentration

Increased concentration
of reactant – forward
reaction will occur.
Increased concentration
of any product – net
backward reaction
Change in Pressure
Has affect on equilibrium involving gaseous phase,
either in a homogenous or heterogeneous state.
Increased pressure-
More no. of mol of product = backward reaction
Lesser no. of mol of product = forward reaction
Equal no. of mol of reactant and product= no effect
Change in Temperature
Exothermic Reaction
Increasing temperature
= backward reaction
Decreasing
temperature= forward
reaction
Endothermic reaction
Increase in temperature
= Forward reaction
Decrease in temperature
= Backward reaction
Catalyst
Helps to achieve
equilibrium
faster.
Application of Le Chatlier’s principle
Physical Equilibrium

• Melting of ice
ice⇌water ∆H=+6kJ/mol−1
Increasing the temperature = forward
reaction  Vaporization of water
Increasing pressure = forward water ⇌water vapor ∆H= +
reaction
Increasing temperature = forward
reaction
Increasing pressure = backward
reaction
Chemical Equilibria
 Formation of SO3
2SO2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3
∆H= -ve
Forward reaction will
require high pressure , low
 Formation of NO3
temperature and a catalyst
N2 + O2 ⇌ 2NO3
∆H= +ve
Forward reaction will require
high temperature and no effect
of pressure.
