LEARNING OBJECTIVES AT THE END OF THIS CHAPTER, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
1. Multiply and divide simple algebraic fractions
2. Add and subtract algebraic fractions with linear or
quadratic denominators
3. Change the subject of a formula
4. Find the value of an unknown in a formula
REDUCING ALGEBRAIC FRACTIONS ◦ To reduce an algebraic fraction to lowest terms, first factor the numerator and the denominator; then reduce, (or divide out) common factors. ADDING FRACTIONS ◦ To add fractions, there is a simple rule: SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS ◦ Subtracting fraction has the same rule as adding fractions. Multiplying Fractions ◦ Multiplying is the easiest of all, just multiply the tops together and the bottoms together. ◦ To get the simplest fractions, you can factorize the numerator and the denominators first Dividing Fractions ◦ To divide fractions, first flip the fraction we want to divide by, then use the same method as for multiplying CHECK POINT

It can be recognized as the letter on its own on one side of the equals sign. ◦ In order to change the subject of a formula, or rearrange a formula, items in the formula need to be rearranged so a different variable is the subject EXAMPLES: ◦ Example 2: Multiplying and dividing ◦ Example 1: adding and subtracting 1.
