CHAPTER 1

1.4 & 1.5 ADDITION and SUBTRACTION of INTEGERS

* Same Signs ! In adding two integers with the same signs;
first we find the sum ignoring their signs and then give the
answer with the same sign.
Ex: 4  3  Ex:  7    2  
12  5   3   11 
6  2   11   2  
1  11 
 9    3 
CHAPTER 1
HOMEWORK!!! Do the following operations.

a)  20    36   d)  60    2  

b)  10    10   e)  7    34  

c)  8   9   f)  90    1 

CHAPTER 1
* Different Signs ! In adding two integers with the different signs;
first we find the difference between these integers, then
we take the sign of the bigger integer.

Ex: 4  3  Ex:  6    3 

5  9   12    25 
6  10   36    41 
9  4 
 7    3 
 5   5 
 12    12  
CHAPTER 1
NOTE! Zero is the identity element of addition on int egers.

Ex:  3    0  

8  0 

a)  5  A  4 d)  12   A  3

b) A   5   12 e) A   4   0

c) A   9   0 f ) 0    A   7
