Cartesian

Coordinate
System
Grade 8 - Mathematics
Objectives
Illustrate rectangular coordinate system and its uses;
Give the coordinates of a point on a coordinate
plane;
Plot points on a coordinate plane;
Determine which quadrant a point is located.
Rectangular Coordinate System

oIt is also known as Cartesian

Coordinate System in honor of Rene
Descartes, who invented it.

Rene Descartes
Rectangular Coordinate System

oIt is constructed by drawing two

perpendicular number lines, the
horizontal number line (x – axis)
and the vertical number line (y –
axis) which intersect at a point
called origin.
Origin
(0, 0)
Rectangular Coordinate System

oThe two lines divide the plane into

four areas called quadrants.
oThe quadrants are numbered using
Roman numerals.

Quadrant III Quadrant IV

Rectangular Coordinate System

Each point in the

(3, 4)
plane corresponds to
exactly one ordered
pair of number (x, y).
(-4, -2)
Rectangular Coordinate System
oThe first number in the
pair, x is called abscissa
(3, 4) or x – coordinate.
oThe second number in the
pair, y is called ordinate
(-4, -2) or y – coordinate.
