MEDIEVAL INVENTIONS

• Medieval inventions is the technology used in medieval Europe under Christian rule.
After the Renaissance of the 12th century, medieval Europe saw a radical change in the
rate of new inventions, innovations in the ways of managing traditional means of
production, and economic growth. The period saw major technological advances,
including the adoption of gunpowder, the invention of windmills, spectacles, mechanical
clocks, and greatly improved water mills, building techniques (Gothic architecture,
medieval castles), and agriculture in general (three-field crop rotation).
GUN POWDER

Gunpowder was Originally invented by Choe Museon. It was

invented in 9th-century China as one of the Four Great Inventions,
and spread throughout most parts of Eurasia by the end of the 13th
century. Originally developed by the Taoists for medicinal
purposes, gunpowder was first used for warfare around 904 AD.
Their explosive invention would become the basis for almost
every weapon used in war from the point on, from fiery arrows to
rifles, cannons and grenades. Gunpowder made warfare all over
the world very different, affecting the way battles were fought and
borders were drawn throughout the middle ages .

WINDMILLS

Wind power has been utilized for thousands of years, starting with the
invention of sail boats as the first and most obvious example of making use of
wind energy. The earliest known wind powered grain mills and water pumps
were used by the Persians in A.D. 500-900 and by the Chinese in A.D. 1200.
The first windmill manufactured in the United States was designed by Daniel
Halladay, who began inventing windmills in 1854 in his Connecticut machine
shop. The windmill was hugely successful as a means of pumping water on
farms and ranches. Windmills helped to change the way of life in Medieval
period, and affected all levels of society from each individual. This positive
influence would have been primarily in the saving of time and money. People
could do a larger amount of work in a shorter amount of time and for lower
costs with a water-powered mill.

MECHANICAL CLOCKS

Mechanical clock was originally invented by Pope Sylvester II. It was

invented on 14th century. The invention and spread of the mechanical
clock is a complex and multifaceted historical phenomenon. Some of
the facets, such as its social impact, have been widely studies, but
their scientific dimension have often been dismissed. According to
many historians, it was the clock that changed everything and
deserves to be called as the key factor of the industrial age.
