What is Mechanics
2
MECHANICS

Mechanics can be defined as

science which describes the
condition of bodies under the action
of forces

DYNAMIC: deals with bodies at motion

STATICS: deals with bodies at rest condition 3

CENTROID
It is defined as a point about which the entire line, area or volume
is assumed to be concentrated.

Centroid word is used to represent center of line, arc, square,

rectangle, triangle, circle etc.

4
5
CENTER OF GRAVITY
It is defined as a point about which the entire weight of the body
is assumed to be concentrated.
Center of Gravity (C.G) word is used to represent center of solid
bodies like cube, cone, cuboid, sphere etc.

6
7
CENTER OF MASS
Center of mass is the unique point where all of the mass of the
system could be considered to be concentrated.

Varigno’s Theorem/Principles of
Moments
The Principle of Moments, also known as Varignon's Theorem,
states that the moment of any force is equal to the algebraic sum of
the moments of the components of that force.

Axis of Reference

The C.G. of a body is always calculated with reference to some

assumed axis. This assumed axis is known as axis of reference.

11
Axis of Symmetry

The axis which divide the figure into two identical parts is called axis
of symmetry.
