 What are Engineering ceramics?
 Characteristics of Ceramics
 Types of Ceramics Products
 Traditional Ceramics

 Application of Engineering ceramics
 Field of a Ceramic Engineer
 Ceramic engineering is the science and
technology of creating objects from
inorganic, non-metallic materials. This is
done either by the action of heat, or at lower
temperatures using precipitation reactions
from high-purity chemical solutions.
 Its chemical compositions vary considerably,

from simple compounds to mixtures of many

complex phases bonded together.
 To be most frequently silicates, oxides,
nitrides and carbides
 Typically insulative to the passage of electricity

and heat
 More resistant to high temperatures and harsh

environments than metals and polymers

 Hard but very brittle
 Ceramics used for engineering applications,
can be divided into two groups:
1) Traditional ceramic materials
2) Advanced ceramic materials

 Properties of Ceramic Products include

Extreme hardness, High wear resistance,
Corrosion resistance, Heat resistance, Low
electrical and thermal conductivity
 Made from three basic components: clay,
silica (flint) and feldspar.

 Advanced ceramics are ideally suited for
industrial applications that provide a physical
interface between different components due
to their ability to withstand high
temperatures, vibration and mechanical
shock.
 A type of ceramic used in specialized,

recently developed applications.

 Advanced ceramic include Electroceramics,
Dielectric Ceramics, Fast Ion Conductor
Ceramics, Piezoelectric Ceramics etc.

 The special character of ceramic materials
gives rise to many applications in
materials engineering, electrical engineering,
chemical engineering and
mechanical engineering. As ceramics are heat
resistant, they can be used for many tasks for
which materials like metal and polymers are
unsuitable.
 They are used in space industry because of
their low weight.
 They are used as cutting tools.
 They are used as refractory materials.
 They are used as thermal insulator.
 They are used as electrical insulator.
 Ceramic Engineering” is the one of the most
important branch of engineering that deals
with the creation of objects from inorganic &
non-metallic materials. Thus, Ceramic
Engineering includes purification of raw
materials, production of chemical compounds
and complete study of their structures.
 Employment of materials engineers include

glass industries, Electrical accessories,

Building accessories production etc.
