HOW CAN YOU TELL IF SOMEONE IS PHISHING ON YOUR
ACCOUNT?
• There are various ways to know if someone is phishing your account. It could be that your
trusted company or bank sent you an e-mail to verify your account, it may be that you are
sent a congratulatory text, call or mail, saying that you won something and giving you
promising ultimatums, or it could be the slightest change in the URL of your trusted website.
Phishers can go through extraordinary lengths such as copying every detail of a company
and sending you an alarming e-mail to actually making a believable website, just as long as
their prey eats the bait these fakers will go through things we think are impossible and if we
become soft and easily persuade, chances are we will lose everything from personal
information to the last penny.
HOW DID MR. MALIBIRAN LOSE HIS MONEY IN THE
BANK? NARRATE THE INCIDENT.
• Businessman Carlos D. Malibiran lost his money due to a phishing scam, which was
reported on September 19, 2015. Malibiran was sent an email from what he thought was
a legitimate source, stating that he needs to verify his credentials, claiming that its for
”additional protection”. He follows obediently and as a result, a total of P159,000 were
withdrawn from his account without his knowledge from July to October 2014. On
January 12, 2015, the business manager of Union Bank Aurora-Balete Drive branch sent
a letter to Malibiran saying that his account's credentials were compromised, which
allowed the unauthorized fund transfers.
DO YOU THINK ONLINE BANKING IS STILL SAFE?
• Yes, I do think that online banking is still a safe method of keeping, transferring or
withdrawing your money, especially in this difficult times with the pandemic. With online
banking you can do whatever needs to be transacted in the comforts of your home. Just
as long as you know how to be thorough and efficiently investigate on questionable
manners that are related to your bank account then you have nothing to worry about.
Once you see a phishing mail or you are suspecting something peculiar emergently
report it the authorities or verify first with the company you are transacting with and lastly
block or delete that mail.
HOW CAN YOU AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM OF
PHISHING?
• We can use a ton of methods to avoid becoming a victim of phishing scams. You can try to watch or read
informative articles or videos regarding phishing, download an anti-phishing software or a VPN to avoid
phishing activities before it actually reaches you, when you feel like you received a phishing e-mail detect and
verify if its credentials are true or compare it with previous e-mails sent by your trusted source and see if the
language, signs, details, etc. coincide, if you have confirmed that it is a phishing e-mail, remain calm report it to
reportphishing@apwg.org, call the company of your trusted source and block, mark as spam or delete that e-
mail so you will never have to see it again. If all of us could practice these simple methods phishing cases will
drastically decrease in all the corners of the world and with the simple act of reporting and knowing how to do
better in dealing with the harmful threats and dangers that comes with our beloved, addicting media, we can be
a great example for humankind to be more aware and cautious of the things we do and how it can affect our
state of life.
